I honestly think my only complaint about that scene is that... a scene such as that should be able to happen without someone going OMG HDU GIRL POWER/FANSERVICE/CATER TO WOMEN/ACT LIKE BOYS ARE WORTHLESS or whatever the objections were. Maybe it was a little fanservice-y, but ffs, it's just a brief scene. It really should just be a normal, common kind of scene, nothing out of the ordinary, without people assuming bad intent. Makes me wonder if we would have gotten as strong of a reaction had it been a team of guys.

It really should be a normal scene, but it's not, so it stood out.

For it to be normal, MCU movies would have needed to have been doing woman-only pose-as-a-group shots more often before this. Hopefully this marks the first of many and it will start feeling normal.

I think a lot of the protest comes from a sexist angle, but... it wasn't a particularly empowering scene to me, either. I'm not opposed to fanservice moments, but not if that's all we're getting as opposed to better scenes, more lines, better writing, etc. for the female characters involved. The scene was easy, it wasn't earned. That's why it feels artificial to me.

I wonder how many of the MCU movies even pass the Bechdel test?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Just under half of them and some of them just squeak in.

Pepper being thrown in was odd to me. Don't get me wrong, I've always thought she was awesome but not as a 'go kick ass on the battlefield' type woman but in her being a kickass business woman who can handle Tony.
It frustrates me that to the MCU 'strong woman' must always equal 'can kick ass on a battlefield'. I also love Mantis and think she's an awesome strong woman again not because she can necessarily kick ass directly but because of her empathetic nature.

I agree that people definitely overreacted but it does seem a little silly that they felt the need to put that in there when we already know how badass and strong these characters are.

It is a little ridiculous when you think about it. Every woman on the battlefield just took a second out of whatever they were doing and gathered themselves to one spot.... for no reason really? To have Captain Marvels back? As if she needed any help... and if she did why only from girls?
