I think, for me, it'd really depend on how/why they "enjoy" it

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the original comment mentioned how it was because those movies were rapey and sexualized horror in that specific way, and that was why they side-eyed the people who enjoyed them.

Oh, if that's the reason they're into it then yeah that's iffy

If it was more the trainwreck syndrome can't look away fascinated by creepy shit kind of thing, more understandable

agreed

I won't touch Centipede but I watched Hostel 2 a while back (ending was a good twist) wouldn't rewatch, watched Hostel recently because Jay Hernandez is on my radar now and wow it's shocking in places but I appreciated the overall storyline without enjoying the particular tortures. I've not seen the Saw movies but I'm aware of them and wouldn't judge anyone for watching them, though maybe if that's their favorite ever thing I'd be more leery. I like the Evil Dead movies, not favorite of all time but I like them. Where is OP drawing the line.

I've never watched human centipede before, so I searched it up and had to try not to laugh at the images of a bunch of old dudes with their heads up each others asses. I'm sure it's horrific and terrifying, but out of context it looks so ridiculous.

Old dudes? I seem to recall it was two girls and one youngish Asian dude. Was there a sequel/remake?

I think there was a sequel, yes....

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
There are two sequels.

Good fucking gods why.

Yeah, I hate 'torture porn' films, although I used to watch them when I was a lot younger. I had a serious gore phase during my early to mid teens. Maybe in part cause my best friend was seriously into that stuff and she got me into it.

My reasons for watching were simple curiosity. I wanted to see the worst of humanity. I wanted to see the absolute darkness inside them. In real life I abhor violence and have never even slapped or screamed at a person in my life, let alone perpetrated any of the horrendous cruelties in those films. So I wanted to understand their world that was so far away from my own.

Later in life I went through basically a real life version of one of those movies for a few months. Needless to say, PTSD doesn't lend itself to enjoying this particular genre. I can't watch a movie like that anymore without seriously dissociating.

I mean, I hate that kind of movie and wouldn't watch it myself, but I don't judge other people for enjoying them. They're meant to be horrific!

Thanks for reminding me of Serbian Film. Watched it out of curiosity (after being told not to lol), and that shit is still with me all these years later. Fucked my shit up real good.

Watched the Human Centipede series out of curiosity too. That shit was just really dumb, but also "how did this even get made?".

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe i just don't remember it that well, it's been years, but i feel like hostel is not remotely on the same torture porn plane as a serbian film and human centipede

(Anonymous) 2019-08-21 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a fan of all horror, from 80s cheese to gory,so probably someone you don't want to date, but I am really a very peaceful and empathetic person who acknowledges her interest in the dark side of humanity (criminologist irl by the way).

That being said, I think Hostel has a plot and commentary behind and I would argue some value as a film rather than just guts. Same with Saw. Human Centipede is so ott gross that it's almost funny in a way? Like not even remotely realistic and therefore not really scary to me

Serbian Film though, I have no desire to ever watch. I read a synopsis out of curiosity and yup... No thanks. That is really "torture porn".

CW: Rape

I only started watching horror movies *after* I was raped.

I was the biggest baby when it came to horror movies before that, I couldn't even watch a NOES movie without nightmares.
But having had that experience, horror movies usually end with a woman going through shit and defeating that villain. That's cathartic and makes me feel stronger.
