So the good cowboys ride light gray horses?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they wear uh ...light grey hats.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I admit I'm not a horsey kind of person but I've never heard of that supposed distinction being made as an "ah ha you're LYING!!!" kind of detail. It's pretty pedantic, for starters.

I'm just imagining the character as little horse girl Columbo now

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
thank god I was a shade too old for that series when I had my horse phase...but you're right, "real horse experts" don't get pedantic about white horses. I'm lmao at this author.

My experience is different, but it might be more of a cultural thing? Nobody I know who knows horses calls greys anything but greys. I wouldn't shame anyone for calling a thing the wrong thing, but they're grey unless they're entirely pink-skinned. You can tell by looking at the nose and hooves. Dominant white is genetic, so is Sabino and different Paint types, and Cremello is a different gene again. It's important to classify correctly if you're involved in breeding horses because unfortunately there's also Lethal White which is a fatal genetic combination.

Grey and white horses are cool to watch mature because they start coloured with sometimes only a bit of white hair around their nose and get progressively lighter with age.

My first horse was a weirdo. I called her grey because it was easier but she was a leopard appaloosa. All white hair but if you ran a hose over her you could see her spots. Only one person I know was able to pick her out without seeing her wet, and he breeds for colour.

I've always heard them called greys as well and I'm only tangentially acquainted with horses.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Grey not white. I know just enough about horses to know this and I'd expect someone with a vested interest or keen hobby to know it and use the correct terminology.

I came here to say some of this. It's an important distinction you only know if you'rve been around horses. I had it gently pointed out to me when I started helping out at our local stables. And I've only ever heard horse people use greys.

Someone mocking a beginner for it is ridiculous though.

Yeah, I think there's probably a cultural/ geographical difference here.

A horse rescue I used to volunteer at rescued a few foals once and one was a cute chestnut but something about her (pale eyelashes I think? It’s been a while) screamed to me that she’d go grey. Nobody believed me but I was vindicated in the end. :)

I have a cousin who's super into horses and now I'm tempted to ask her about white horses.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Grey "whites" have grey skin.

White (dominant white) horses have pink skin.

Also plenty of horse people just call greys "white" because who the fuck even gets that pedantic..?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I only vaguely know about horses, but this was my first thought. Like I used to switch between a tricoloured horse, and a white/gray spotted horse, and the white on the tricolour was definitely white... (I have no idea what I'm talking about;;)

I agree. But apparently only children when they're trying to exclude someone they don't like...

Arggghh “tricolour horse” makes me twitch.

I remember that book, as I too was obsessed with both horses and The Saddle Club as a child (still obsessed with horses), and it wasn't just the white horse thing that caught that girl out. It was also that she said her horse threw up (they physically can't), and that her aforementioned white stallion (the stallion part was just as big of a red flag as the "white" part) kicked her in the leg while she was riding him because it hurt him when she grabbed his mane for support. See, horses don't have very many nerve endings in their mane hair follicles, so grabbing their manes like that isn't really gonna hurt them. There was also the fact that she kept telling wildly inconsistent lies about her past experience.

Also, I've found that how insistent horse-people are about not calling grey horses white largely depends on the overall culture of each stable/ranch/riding discipline. Some don't care either way, and others care SO MUCH. On the whole, I'd say that stables/riders who are mostly focused on English riding tend to care more than those who are more into the Western disciplines, and since the Saddle Club girls only rode Western when they were at their friend's dude ranch, it actually makes perfect sense that they'd be very particular about using the correct terminology (just like I was at that age).

Now, to make up for that tl;dr infodump, please enjoy this picture of my dearly beloved and sorely missed grey Arabian gelding, Sharif. He was my best friend for 20 years and I miss him more and more with each passing day.

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you for sharing your horse pic! He's so beautiful. I'm sorry he's no longer with you.

(I do think it was fair that they exposed the girl's other lies, but I thought including the "white" thing was incredibly petty. And my stable was exclusively English riding too, so I don't think that had anything to do with making the characters be so particular.)

(Anonymous) 2019-08-21 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I’d be really impressed to see a horse kick somebody in the leg while they were riding it. I guess it’s theoretically possible but that’d be some serious horse yoga. If it was a mule I’d find it more believable. ;)

So Red Dead LIED to me?!?!?!? smh.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-21 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always remembered this 'fact', but not where i got it from, and now i'm thinking it must've been these books...
