He carried Once.

In the early seasons yes. Then they tried to make him good again after his character went full one evil and did unforgivable things. At least once they went good with Regina they stuck with it, though she had done unforgivable things earlier. Rumple was a revolving door, and it got old real fast.

+1 That was the number one reason I stopped watching the show.

He was the best actor on that show by far (with Ginny and Colin a distant second and third). It's a shame the writing was so awful. They had the potential to create some really complex and interesting characters and they just... didn't.

Yeah, Robert Carlyle is a good actor in almost anything!

he tried valiantly, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he succeeded

His acting was great, but the character was just so awful.

I madly adored Rush, but I'm not sure he was meant to be particularly Machiavellian, so much as a desperate man running on secrets, spite and vinegar, scrambling to stay ahead of the rest of the universe. I feel like 'Machiavellian' implies more control? Rush was a hot mess from day one, and his schemes tended to blow up in his face ... a lot.

I kept waiting for one of the other scientists to step up and stop taking his shit and then develop the relationship that Radek and Rodney had.

I drifted away from Stargate Universe for other reasons but as much as I like Carlyle as an actor, that character was hard for me to like and therefore watch. Which is a testament to Carlyle's acting, but still.

Yes, Rush was the reason they were trapped in the 1st place, he was an arrogant dick and I hated him. There were other things like the skeevy sleeping with people via telepathic imprint on other human's bodies thing and I was glad to nope out about midway.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
but he didn't actually sleep with Mandy? she kissed him and he kissed her back but he seemed like he didn't want to go all the way with her (probably because he'd just relieved his beloved wife's death like two episodes before?). it was YOUNG (my favorite character incidentally) who slept with his ex-wife in Telford's body. but making Camille's body kiss someone isn't the same thing as sex at all!

I only stayed with OUAT for him, so 🤷‍♀️

The only thing I've ever liked him in was The Full Monty.

Have you seen Plunkett & Macleane? He was fun in that.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, I completely forgot that movie! It was so much fun!

*looks up*

Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller and Liv Tyler.

Plunkett is a druggist who has gone broke and turned to robbery to pay his bills, while Macleane was a minor member of the aristocracy who has resorted to similar means to support himself. They enter a gentlemen's agreement: They decide to rid the aristocrats of their belongings. With Plunkett's criminal know-how and Macleane's social connections, they team up to be soon known as "The Gentlemen Highwaymen".

This sounds fun, I'm sold.

Heee. You need to watch some of his other stuff. He's amazing.

I didn't care for OUAT at all, even though i *tried* to watch, for him. Meh.

But I loved him as Dr. Rush - he was just...amazing. So much more interesting than about half the other characters in that series.

Dittoing this so hard, OP.
