He carried Once.

In the early seasons yes. Then they tried to make him good again after his character went full one evil and did unforgivable things. At least once they went good with Regina they stuck with it, though she had done unforgivable things earlier. Rumple was a revolving door, and it got old real fast.

+1 That was the number one reason I stopped watching the show.

He was the best actor on that show by far (with Ginny and Colin a distant second and third). It's a shame the writing was so awful. They had the potential to create some really complex and interesting characters and they just... didn't.

Yeah, Robert Carlyle is a good actor in almost anything!

he tried valiantly, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he succeeded

His acting was great, but the character was just so awful.

yeah. honestly, all of the writing.

the whole show was just so desperately devoid of any charm beyond "I understood that reference"

it had a decent hook of a premise but it obstinately did the most bland or blantant possible thing with it at every single narrative opportunity. like going to a quirky, nice looking restaurant and buying five orders of microwave chicken strips off the kids menu.

carlyle in this analogy is mustard, I guess

I remember reading interviews where the actors flat-out admitted they had no idea why their characters did some of the stuff they did, or that the writers would change their mind about backstory/motivation/season arcs every couple of episodes. It wasn’t only his character that was a problem.

Yeah, it seemed like they were all trying their best with what they were given. It's just that what they were given made no goddamn sense.

Agreed. There's so much Rumbelle and I couldn't stand how he treated her so I was done with the show after the first season.
