Re: Inspired by 12 - Cats the movie vs. Cats the stage musical

They're cat-flavored humans in skintight costumes. They may be different in the details, but the essence is the same. The internet is severely overreacting to this. Considering some of the comments I've seen on this comm with suggestions on how it *should* have been done (i.e. actual CGI animal cats, adding cat noses to the human faces, etc.) I'm rather glad they went the route the did.

By your logic, CGI movie trailer Sonic looks just like animated series Sonic because they're both humanoid blue hedgehogs with shoes. Which is definitely an opinion, but not one that you're going to get a lot of people to back you on.

Right? Design is the difference between two things with the same “essence.”

Right? All of this "in essence" bit is bizarre.

Yes! Without the human dance choreography there really isn't much point to the show. Much of the music is painfully derivative. The plot is extremely thin and barely developed. If you're not going to have Rum Tum Tugger do a Tim Curry strut to center stage and leer right into the camera, what's the fucking point?

Found the person who can't see the difference between the two costumes. You're being really weird about this, anon. I mean yeah, the internet is overreacting, because it's too fun not to... but you're glossing over the "different in the details" bit. A rusted out Dodge Dart and a brand new Porsche 911 are both motor vehicles with four wheels, but anyone with eyes can tell you they don't look the same.

Or y'know they could have gone the actual musical route and played it straight. Using the costumes Cats is known for and not have the exact same rendering for every single character like another anon said.
Even if we're talking about literal cats, different breeds have their own unique looks, this is something the musical plays at, something the movie clearly did not care enough to attempt. Both are 'cats', though I'd say the movie is more on the line of 'cat' since everyone has the exact same giant face on a too tiny head. The musical uses makeup to outline different feline features, like the 'cat eye' look, or highlighting the cheekbones in a whisker like design. There is no attempt at makeup in the movie from what I could tell, so all of them looked plainly human. Details are pretty much everything when it comes to the stage, and especially when it comes to CGI. Nobody know's what you're talking about when you say 'essence'.

I recommend you search up the Painting Scene from Black Sails, because that is you.

Unfortunately this is the best link I can find right now. (Though I'd argue he has a better argument then you do)

ITA, anon. Cat-flavored humans sums it up.

If I actually cared about this movie and the play it stems from and the poetry book the play stems from (which I have actually read), then maybe I'd care about the specifics of the character designs, but I don't, so I don't.

Geez you sound pretentious.

When you swing by a thread to let people know how little you care about the topic being discussed, everyone admires you for how cool you are.

Thirding this. Where is my T-Swift "You need to calm down" gif, because this thread seriously needs it. People are really, genuinely out here getting offended that you disagree with them about the design of some characters in a movie that's not even out yet.
