Yeah this. I'm part of the queer community myself but most webcomics that fall all over themselves to be as diverse as possible with every obsure ~gender~ and skin condition etc. version available represented, it's usually shit. This has less to do with the groups being "represented" and more with the authors/artists being ridiculously tryhard and thirsty of earning their woke points instead of actually being committed/capable of writing an interesting/engaging story.

Not a fan of El Goonish Shive, I take it?

(I wish I read enough webcomics to come up with something that’s actually good. I’m not sure if Not Drunk Enough counts as diverse by your standards, and I didn’t like Monsterful.)

(Anonymous) 2019-08-24 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I get the impulse tbh but I think it might be taking it a little bit too far

then again, we are talking about webcomics

(Anonymous) 2019-08-24 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I'm all for diversity and representation in media, but very rarely does it come across as natural when a story can boast a cast which ticks off every possible gender expression and sexual orientation, body size and racial background. The only example I can think off is Menage a 3, which is just about the antithesis of the kind of webcomic we're talking about here.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-24 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
i get this tbh. used to really enjoy a webcomic until the artist decided that every character has to be some form of minority "this one is gay! this on is nb! here are two poc women with disabilities/on the spectrum on a date that's totally important for us to see right now even tho it has nothing to do with the main plot" it's such a slog

like, i'm bi, i want to more representation for all peeps, but do you really have to sacrifice all pacing just to yell "look at how woke i am!!"?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel a lot of webcomic artists don't have real ambition towards stories and storytelling, they just want their cool woke OC's to sit on a couch and banter. Which is probably fun to draw, but... god it's so boring to read though. >_>

(Anonymous) 2019-08-24 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my sense, too. I only read comics for interesting stories, and if it looks like you're just drawing as an excuse to show off how woke you are, I'm not quite convinced it's worth dedicating time to reading.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-25 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
This was already a thing 15 years ago, before wokeness became fashionable. I used to draw and read webcomics and I swear 90% of them were just characters sitting on a couch making quippy remarks to one another. The only difference between then and now, is that those characters used to all be white back then. In the webcomic world, the couch potatoes genre of webcomics is like the high school AUs in fanfiction. People just like to write/draw what they know.

Oof

(Anonymous) 2019-08-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I'm queer, but...

There's a fine line between representation and gratuitous box ticking. Not every comic needs a white, a black, an asian, a mexican, a gay, lesbian, trans and nb character in the cast. It's worse than tokenism.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-24 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
(Same poster, my phone does weird shit to comment boxes)

I just feel they put more effort into making sure all the boxes are ticked than making the story interesting to read. Nothing's going on, but we have an Asian NB character, aren't we cool and woke? Blech. Miss me with it.

Ah yes, because having no interest in bad stories with cardboard cutouts of faux-woke stereotypes makes you a mentally challenged alt-righter.

Slightly Damned got into that, but it's still a great webcomic. Takes a bit to get started, and the art is pretty bad at first, but definitely worth it. I do understand what you mean though. It shouldn't feel shoehorned in there, or just told to the audience. It should follow the basic premise of show not tell. If it can't be shown (speaking metaphorically, not as in literally drawing it) then maybe we don't really need to know the character is nonbinary.

Reminds me of another comic I saw-- two white girls lying on a bed, one drawing, one reading

Reading girl: Working on your comic?
Drawing girl: Yeah, it's super great. The characters are all queer POC.
Reading girl: What's the plot?
Drawing girl: The what?

It's so true it hurts, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-25 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to see this comic, anyone have a link?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone have some recs for comics that defy this trend? The only one I'm able to think of off the top of my head is Depression Comix, which isn't really a 'traditional' serial webcomic but does have a general cast, which is fairly diverse and deliberately so (to show that mental illness affects all people, rather than specifically for 'woke points').

(Anonymous) 2019-08-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, I think Oglaf is actually fairly good at casually including queer characters without making a big fuss about it.

Order of the Stick
Sleepless Domain
Namesake
Sister Claire (I means you'd probably hate it just because every character is queer intentionally, never mind that it has a good story ~despite~ that)
Unsounded
Peritale
Blindsprings

...I mean, yes, but different readers have different ideas of what qualifies as "something interesting happens."

Oglaf is mostly random sex jokes -- that's not going to grab everyone, even though it's well-done. The Rock Cocks is a fun, light story about up-and-coming rock stars who also have a bunch of sex -- if what you really like is SF/F, that's not going to satisfy. O Human Star is SF with family drama and a robotics revolution, but what if OP is bored by anything lower-stakes than political intrigue and spaceship battles?

Skin Horse, The Hazards of Love, Magical How, Sanity Circus, Alice and the Nightmare, broken, Strong Female Protagonist, The Stoop-Gallants, Cucumber Quest, Spacetrawler, Tamberlane -- all have LGBTQ casts with racial diversity (not counting the ones that are mostly animals). Love 'em all. And I have two of my own that I happen to think are pretty good.

But they cover a whole range of genres, plots, and themes. Can't guarantee any of them fit OP's interests (or yours) (or anyone else's) without having more to go on.

How to Be a Werewolf! There's queer folks, diversity, a FANTASTIC plot and great worldbuilding and the slowburniest of slowburn relationships. Highly recommend.

Also, seconding Order of the Stick.

May I also point towards Dumbing of Age? Yes, yes I may.
