While on Tumblr, I recently came across a link to a survey that gave you a rough indication of how authoritarian your thinking was, based on how strongly you agreed or disagreed with a range of statements.
I was quite pleased with my result, and then I looked at some of the notes on the Tumblr post and had to laugh:
Numerous people were complaining that the statements were unclear - things like "I want to government to imprison or kill all the bad people", and they were pouting because well, they DO want the government to imprison or kill all the Nazis and the pedophiles and the people who ship incest who are obviously moral deviants! But is that what the statement was talking about? ??
And I'm just sitting there and laughing because of course that's an authoritarian position! Of course thinking the government should dictate morality and lock people up for violating that morality is authoritarian!
Obviously I can't do any reliable surveys of the anti population, but I would lay money that most of them have grown up under conservative cultures, and though they would almost all describe themselves as liberal, they're still drawing from the conservative playbook, and can't work out why trying to drive someone to suicide for drawing filthy deviant art is supposed to be bad.

Yeah, sigh, I've seen that too.

"But it can't be authoritarian because authoritarian is a BAD thing and I want the government to force everyone to be GOOD*!"
*according to my personal morality

Then nobody understands that's exactly how the other side thinks, it's just that what they define as good differs.

Oh for sure. If you grow up in an extremist environment, your predisposition towards extremism isn't going to change just because you flip sides.

To be fair, I think a lot of it happened because today's early 20 something fans grew up in a) Tumblr-oriented fandom instead of message-board oriented fandom and b) got their first exposure to social justice while they were also just discovering fandom. Since tumblr is so disjointed and more of a youthful place, they didn't get the slightly more organized fandom format where "fandom elders" (really just adults in fandom) modeled behavior. There's been fandom drama forever, but it was limited to who had access to the internet before, and now it's pretty much everyone.

All of this has resulted in them equating IRL morals with what you enjoy in fandom and fiction and thinking that harassment is a-okay if it's in the name of "the greater good." And the people who would have been problems in fandom no matter what the platform now hide behind "this isn't a ship war, I'm just making sure pedos stop posting!" even when it's grossly not related at all, and still not applicable even on the rare occasion it is related.

It's hilarious because a lot of those people are also fans of Marxism, socialism and/or communism in some way if their bios are to be believed and they still claim to be non-authoritarian.
Like, come on, there hasn't been a single socialist state that hasn't turned into an authoritarian dictatorship. What boxes are you expecting your ideology to tick in those surveys?

How lazy can your trolling get, say?

Sorry, but your post just screamed "did you know Hitler was also a socialist? That communism killed more people than capitalism and right leaning politics? Checkmate, leftists" rhetoric that alt-righters throw around all the time.

Honey, I lived in a communist state. I know people who died/have family members who died because of it. Just because I'm not a fan of the communist kind of dictatorship doesn't mean I'm a right winger. How are you that stupid?

You... don't know what socialism is, do you?

I lived in a communist state for a while, I'm pretty sure I know these things better than you. Socialism is nice when paired with other ideologies but not feasible as a non-dictatorship in a pure socialist state form.
