Which is ironic because book Pepper isn't just spouting what she's heard at home. Her mother is described as a hippy wannabe. Pepper is a feminist but also something of a tomboy and well, just comes across as an awesome and loyal friend. The TV adaptation Pepper came across as a joyless misery.

This. It's a writing issue mostly, where all the characters are lacking in nuance. But unlike Tennant and Sheen, the child actors don't have the experience to compensate for that.
