wow, almost every single response to this is just proof of what she's talking about. anytime someone talks about disliking female characters everyone gets all "MISOGYNY >("

wtf guys they are fictional characters. come on. and when you're reading/watching something for the gay OF COURSE you're going to dislike the females. they are taking screen time away from the holy peen.

who gives a shit?

also, disliking characters =/= bashing characters

Re: 122

this.

Re: 122

No one denied that what she's talking about is true. We're only saying that it's neither cool nor okay and we have no sympathy for her.

Re: 122

(Anonymous) 2008-10-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
hm. i should have worded this better. it's the 'who gives a shit' part that was supposed to be important.

having no interest in or disliking female characters in media because you're more interested in gay subtext isn't misogyny.

Re: 122

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
"I dislike the female because it's in the way of the male, but the only reason it's "in the way" is because I don't want it there at all."

You're right, not remotely misogynistic. At all. Can't imagine where anyone would ever get that idea.

so even though it's TRUE, it's not cool to say so?

Re: 122

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
1) Because disliking a character or some characters who happen to be female is not the same thing as disliking female characters as a group on the grounds that they're female--one of these two things is, in fact, misogynist. (And yes, misogynist. I know how to use that word, and I'd kindly like anyone who suggests that I or others don't fuck off.) Guess which it is.

2) Because you don't have to dislike characters just because they aren't your porn of choice. I hardily assure you, indifference is an option. Liking the gay does not mean you can't like, or are at least, not dislike female characters; it is not a zero sum game.

2.1) If other characters "get in the way" of your ship, you're doing it wrong. Pairings work because you like those two characters together. Not because you dislike or have discredited the competition.

3) Yeah, it's proof she's right that people wouldn't like her bullshit. It's pretty damn unpleasant.

122 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-10-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
jesus fucking christ thank you

I can't even bring myself to reply to most of them. WAY2ASSUMPTIONS, GUISE!

I'm not a fucking misogynist, I like women in real life. These are fictional fucking characters. See, this is what I meant!

and I don't bash anyone, and I respect people who do like the girls, whatever floats your fucking boat, but how dare you jump down my throat?

All I care about is having fun. I want to have fun with people. So why do I have to change myself? In example, I'm watching TTGL and make a face when Nia comes on, whatever, I didn't even say anything, and the girls I was with fucking laid into me just like the fucking rest of you.

Whoever it was that said fandom isn't serious business? Eat my fucking ass. You can see just how serious people are taking this.

goddamn it.

i'm sorry if i offended anyone.

i'm just fucking hurt, okay?

i'm real, nia isn't.

Re: 122 OP

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, special snowflake, I'm going to explain something to you. And I'm not even going to get into the fact that the idea disliking fictional women is something that happens in a vacuum and doesn't imply sexist and misogynistic tendencies. I've gotten into that before, and frankly, I'm not in the mood to open up on it again.

Also, it's not what I dislike about you, based on this secret.

What I dislike about you is that you seem to feel that you have the right to be yourself, without censorship, and have friends. Maybe there's been some failure in proper socialization in your past that didn't impress this on you, but if you do shit people find offensive or unpleasant, they're not going to put up with you. They are not obligated to. You are not entitled to fandom friends.

Now, I think you probably would find friends, even being your real self, because I imagine there's more to you than just disliking female characters and liking bad porn--and there are plenty of other people who like the OOC porn of their pairing, and have no interest in girlbits in their porn whatsoever. A social circle for you probably exists, you just have to find it.

You are a real person. Your actions have real life consequences. Fandom can be serious business when you do things that hurt or offend other people. Sorry if those consequences hurt you, but that's how it works, baby. Just like I don't expect you to like me because of my srs biznss here, you can't expect other people to enjoy your fucking around when it hurts them, or when you don't take things they do find serious, seriously.

It sucks. It hurts. You might not have the friends you want to have. But don't expect sympathy or understanding when you behave offensively, and really don't expect it when you start whining about how awful and hard it is to be you.

Except that most female characters in a series aren't in the way of the yaoi/shounen-ai/slash you're seeking.

I'm hugely into yaoi, and sorry, but you are making us look bad. Especially when you pull your little fandom martyr act. Yeah, women in stories are fictional characters, but as soon as you start hating on the majority of women characters simply because they're in the same canon as the men you want buttsecksing, you're being an asshole.

Nia isn't real. And yes, Nia is Simon's canon love interest! Ooh! Except, you know, she wasn't on the first portion of the show. And is certainly not "in the way" by the end of canon. And it takes almost 0 imagination to set the story before Nia showed up (which, uh, you'd have to do if you shipped Kamina/Simon anyway), after the end of the series (which, if you made some realistic changed OR KICKED LOGIC TO THE CURB!!! would easily let you ship Simon/Viral or possibly Kamina/Simon again I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO MAKE SENSE XD), or in one of the canon AUs Gurren Lagann has, in which I haven't heard of Nia being a major character in most of them.

You can even ship Viral/Simon or Simon/Rossiu or whatever you want to during the series by pretending they didn't find Nia. Or pairing her up with someone else (Yoko?). Or just making her asexual and/or open to Simon being with other people as well as her, because she doesn't seem like the type to throw a fit over that.

Your example of character hate is really just showing that you hate female characters for little reason. It is good that you don't bash people who like them just because you don't! But you're being ridiculous, and yes, at least a little bit sexist. If you dislike anyone, fictional or real, at least partially because they have girlparts, you're being a little bit sexist. That's annoying, and makes other yaoi fans who don't hate female characters because they're female look like idiots.

Which is why I have a problem with that attitude. Not all the rest of it. Just the childish belief that if a character has a vagina, they are somehow a horrible problem.

Re: 122

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
wtf guys they are fictional characters. come on.

See, this right there is the kind of hypocrisy that pisses us off. Fangirls like her are allowed to have unbridled hatred for fictional characters who get in the way of their sacred cock/ass OTP, but other fangirls aren't allowed to hate that kind of behavior...yeah, that makes sense! Except, y'know, NOT.

Re: 122

We oppress their right to free speech, even though it's the vocal majority. Free speech only applies if it agrees with you.

Which is why I say just be openly honest with your opinions and find those who share them. There are plenty out there. Don't hide them and cry oppression.

Re: 122

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Good way to put it. How does that saying go, "You reserve the right to free speech, I reserve the right to think you're an asshole"? That's the stance I take with those types of fanbutts. *nods*

Re: 122

(Anonymous) 2008-10-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Why can't you watch for the gay and like the female characters? Please, I watched Code Geass for the HOMOLUST that is Suzaku and Lelouch and I utterly adored C2, Shirley, Kaguya, Kallen, and Euphie (hell, the only female character I hate in Code Geass was Marianne for being the worst mother ever).

It doesn't have to be exclusive and it's really no excuse.

Although I admit that the misogyny accusations are a little extreme though. The OP seems to dislike the "competition" being a woman more than anything and probably able to like female characters who aren't competition.

Just throwing that out there.

Re: 122

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
No, you don't have to dislike female characters just because you like to pair up two male. Logic fail.

Re: 122

[identity profile] homolingual.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
You know what? I'm a gay guy, and I'm a fan of various female characters as well. Somehow I can actually view them as characters rather than obstacles. Amazing, isn't it?

Re: 122

[identity profile] avidlydelicious.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Gasp! You mean that a vagina isn't automatically a threat to two men loving each other?! How could it not be? The mere presence of a female should automatically distract the viewer and ruin any potential for romance! You confuse me, dear sir! :-P

disliking characters =/= bashing characters

I agree.

And not everyone takes fandom seriously. They shouldn't be bashed for it. You don't see me bashing people who take it seriously. I understand and respect their perspective and outlook. Why can't they respect mine?
