It hasn't replaced it, but it bugs me when someone says "purchased" instead of "bought" for everyday things. I used to follow a popular blogger who would always say things like, "and then I stopped at Old Navy and purchased a new pair of jeans...." Dude they're jeans, not a yacht. You didn't purchase them, you bought them.

This confuses me because I've never thought the phrase "purchased a yacht". Could you not "buy a yacht"? Some billionaire went out and bought four yachts.

"Purchased four yachts" sounds weirder.

"Purchased" just sounds self-important or snooty to me, so I associate it with buying big or extravagant things.

Why does it sound that way to you?

Hmm, I guess I never considered it to be "reserved" for expensive items.

I saw the word in Castlevania II in regards to weapons. "Would you like to purchase a chain whip?" (or whatever it was) I've used "purchase" interchangeably with "buy," though I admit I use "buy" more. But not because I think "purchase" should only apply to specific items.
