Hmm, I guess I never considered it to be "reserved" for expensive items.

I saw the word in Castlevania II in regards to weapons. "Would you like to purchase a chain whip?" (or whatever it was) I've used "purchase" interchangeably with "buy," though I admit I use "buy" more. But not because I think "purchase" should only apply to specific items.
