Looked at my go list and here are the ones from the 90s:

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers (technically it was first released in 1988, but it was 1993 before it was released in North America)
Go the Distance by Michael Bolton
Now That We Found Love (cover) by Heavy D & The Boyz
One Week by Barenaked Ladies
Joyride by Roxette
The One and Only by Chesney Hawkes
Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough by Patty Smyth and Don Henley

I love 500 miles. I was singing it recently and my friend got all pissy at me for singing "Hugh" instead of "you".
I also love one week. I heard some guy do that song perfectly in karaoke in Vegas once.

If I sing 500 Miles, I have to do it with the Scottish accent or it's just not right.

One Week is fun and very Canadian.

AYRT

I remember hearing those Tom Petty songs all the time when I was a kid :D. Mostly on car trips. I think those are the first songs of his I really remember hearing. I like the video for "Mary Jane's Last Dance", too.

Yeah. He had such a great catalog in general. The album Wildflowers is one of my favorite albums in general by anyone. I miss him :(.

And "Groove is in the Heart" is definitely one of those "gotta get up and dance when this is on" songs. It's just so FUN.

There's like six dozen songs that would easily make this list if I let myself think about it, but I don't want to go down that rabbit hole. :P

The ones that came to mind first were:

Long December by The Counting Crows
If It Makes You Happy by Sheryl Crow
One Hand In My Pocket // You Oughta Know (TIE) by Alanis Morissette
Losing My Religion by R.E.M

Also, I was thinking just today about how fucking phenomenal Come To My Window and I Want To Come Over by Melissa Ethridge are. Damn, those songs are doozies. I don't know if I'd put them on my Favorite Songs list, because up until today I hadn't thought about them in years. But shout-out to both those songs, because wow.

"Long December" is my favorite Counting Crows song.

Agreed on the rest of your list as well. I remember those Melissa Ethridge songs being HUGE back in the day. She definitely captured a particular mood and meaning with her music, so yes to her getting some love :).

Re: Favorite 90s songs?

Yeah, I'm a huge Counting Crows fan, so I love the hell out of at least two dozen of their songs. But I think Long December is my #1 fave. It's somehow gorgeously written and hard-hitting while still being extremely accessible, which I think is a rarity. It's delicate yet anthemic. And unlike a lot of songs where non-verbal vocalizations often add to the vibe of the song without really adding anything deeper, in Long December the "na na na na's" are so poignant as to be almost...spiritual. Like, I'm not even a spiritual person, but man, those "na na na na's" cut deep and have a lot to say.
