Stromae!

[personal profile] kribban 2019-08-31 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello, I've been obsessed with Stromae for one year now, yay!

His singing style, sound, lyrics; it's all awesome.

(Also, this time last year, I was extremely happy, so I have a lot of happy feelings attached to his music.)

Here's a full concert, complete with subtitles for people like me who don't know a lick of French:

https://youtu.be/eOZLDQm9c2E

"Alors on danse" and "Papaoutai" are back to back, starting at 1:22, but I recommend the whole concert if you have time.

Feel free to turn this into a music rec thread!

OOooo, I like. I'm going to have to find an album of this.

I just got an album by this German folk metal group Munarheim. I really like their sound, so I'm going to have to find some more of their stuff.

Stromaeis so good. I hate the version of alors danse that Kanye West butchered with his whiny crap rap though.

Overrated fantasy books

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But don't just take the easy way out and list titles, tell us why you think they're overrated and what their flaws are!

A Wizard of Earthsea. People dislike Tolkien because he had so few women in LoTR??? They should try AWoE. Tolkien had far more excuse for the dearth of women, both in terms of date of birth and because of his gender.

Moreover UKLG felt it necessary to write an entire essay to explain what she was getting at in AWoE. Star Trek TOS managed to send the same message in a single episode, "The Enemy Within" without the exposition.

Harry Potter. And I used to be super into it. But while there are parts of the worldbuilding that are interesting, they just aren't good. More like a lot of untapped potential. I still read fanfics sometimes. So something about the world is interesting. But the books just aren't that good.

A Song of Ice And Fire. I like them okay. But I don't think they are as amazing as people say. Grim and dark is not inherently superior.

Wheel of Time. I couldn't even make it through the first book. Really boring. And my favorite book is the Silmarillion, which most people think is boring.

Narnia. Too preachy and too juvenile.

His Dark Materials. The first book was good. But after that it became too preachy. I don't mind messages, even ones I disagree with. But when it gets in the way of plot and the book becomes more about message than plot, then it is no longer a good book, IMHO.

Anything by Jim Butcher.

Dark Tower. It started off well, but I think King just got too enamored with connecting it to his other works. It got too convoluted and there was too much going on. And I think the ending didn't work for me.

Brandon Sanderson's stuff. I find his writing style extremely glib and too clever, and I just don't care about the rigorousness of his magical systems and the cleverness of the rules that he comes up with.

I'd also say Rothfuss but I think disliking his stuff is generally the consensus opinion at this point.

Those horrible 'White Gold Wielder' books. Dear gods, boring.
Honestly, The Last Unicorn, it just never...caught me.

Anything by Piers Anthony. Cheesy writing, misogyny, and he thinks he's way more clever than he is.

Harry Potter - lots of peoples' nostalgic fave, but it's just not that good. Its strength is the world building, which has oodles of charm if not originality. It's also very much an unfulfilled potential thing, which fuels the fandom aspect in terms of fic, so I get that.

Wheel of Time - BOOOOOORING. Terrible writing of female characters, who all seem to be cut from the same cloth.

Belgarian/Mallorean - Same as Wheel of Time, but at least it's shorter.

Sword of Truth - Author has a lot of weird, slightly icky hangups and it's extremely obvious in the writing. Not just his political heavy-handedness, but his thing for hot women in tight leather outfits wielding phallic pain-sticks is also very eyebrow raising. Like dude... your kinks are your kinks, but keep that shit more tightly locked down.

Night Circus - beautiful language, very little plot.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell - beautiful language and world building, plot is slow as molasses.

tw: rape murder suicide

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
If you were accused of a crime - say a bad crime, rape or murder - and you killed yourself...

Do you think your friends and family would be in your corner? Do you think they'd come out "They were innocent!" Or do you think they'd go with a more "No, they might have done it, but I'm still sad" angle?

Re: tw: rape murder suicide

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they someone I love? If someone I loved did something like that, I would say, "No, they might have done it, but I'm still sad". Even if I they were convicted I'd think that. Emotions can't just be turned on and off.

If it's anything sex related, they'd be in my corner 100%, all of them can't imagine me doing anything sexual period. They're correct about that.

Murder, depends on the circumstances. It'd range from "no way" to "maybe? For some reason?"

this is alec holowka, right

i'd like to think they'd privately say i was innocent but i suppose these days it would depend on how publicly i was accused

Sitting on my fat ass all day, or basically staanding around all day. Letting the body get stiff and not in a good way and not allowing exercise or other activity that would be beneficial.

Eating less than two hours before going to the gym.

Drinking a caffeinated beverage less than, like, six-ish hours before going to bed.

Snoozing my alarm fifteen times on my days off and ending up not getting up until like 1 PM, but still being tired anyway because my alarm woke me up every ten minutes for three hours.

I saw Climax by Gaspar Noe two days ago and just can't get it out of my head. It was a very intense experience.

What are some films that screwed with you so hard that you had a hard time readjusting after watching them?

Basically anything super dark and depressing, especially if it is based on real life (Schindler's List for example). I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch depressing movies. I can't always handle them.
