Pretty sure they had an official NC-17 rating back in the day.

I thought FF.N did allow it, but then they felt the looming shadow of the pearl-clutchers brigade's lawyers and slapped a ban on it. I think it was around the same time the site stopped using the same rating system as movies because some lawyers were breathing down the site's neck. Fanfiction online was starting to get a lot more official attention, hence all the disclaimers authors slapped over their stuff.
I might be wrong, but that's my recollection anyway.

You recall correctly. I'm an old fogey who had my NC-17 fic on ff.net purged when they took the rating away. And yes, it was the fear of "OMG THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" people trying to get them for "corruption of minors". Here I am, still rolling my eyes, nearly 20 years later.
