the fandom I was most into during the late 90's/early 00's was so small I was constantly having to explain what it was to people. That got tired real fast.

I dunno. If i were really enjoying a fandom/work/show/whatever, i don't think i could just drop it 'cause some people are assholes.

I'm the opposite. I'm in it for the fanfic. My appetite for fic is endless. An abundance of fanfic is all I ask for. An abundance of other fanworks is also nice. A small/medium fandom doesn't give me these things in anywhere near the volume I crave.

Of course a happy, non-wanky fandom is nice. But the wank has never really bothered me that much. Nowhere near enough to ruin a fandom for me. People who judge me by my fandom's worst members are being silly, and needlessly judgmental, and I don't really care what they think.

I wouldn't leave, but I might become too embarrassed to admit outside of that fandom that I was in it. It sucks to have your fandom bad-mouthed, but I figure people who do that are trying to compensate for their own fandom's reputation or their own behavior. "At least we're not as bad as that other fandom!" I hear people talk shit about the Supernatural fandom, but I don't join in the chorus because I don't care about Supernatural enough to care about the fandom.

That and fandoms so large that they can't retain a cohesive identity more precise than fandom itself. (Harry Potter, mostly.)

Oh, same. Middle sized fandoms are the best. Too small and you don't get any feedback or content to deal with. But mid-sized and you can make decent connections and get a little feedback and content without the utter batshit bullshit that happens in mega fandoms.

It depends, even small fandoms tend to get clique-y. It starts off nicely with everyone enjoying the work the same way, but when one person has a different opinion (i.e. not liking the actor outside of the work, critiquing the work itself, etc.), then gradually they're kicked out of the small fandom over the difference.

Sometimes I miss engaging in fandoms of my favorite things. Even if I still like the work, it's harder now because it's splintered and spread out. Also it depends on the social media/blogging site.
