[Image: A section of the Fifty Shades Darker poster that featured Christian putting a grey mask on Anastasia. It focuses on Anastasia’s face, while she stares out at the viewer with an intense expression.]

Text: I’ve never actually read any of the Fifty Shades books, and have no desire to. My only real exposure to them has been through Jenny Trout’s recaps, which quoted extensively from the text and made me even more disinclined to check them out.

However, she quoted a scene in Fifty Shades Darker set during a masquerade ball where a mysterious, “impeccably dressed” man bids on the chance to have the first dance with Anastasia, getting into a brief bidding war with Christian and always maintaining his cool.

I am ashamed to admit that I found the mental image of that scene really, really hot.

It helps that it includes three things I really like—masquerades, fancy suits, and British guys—but I still feel a little bad that E.L. James was able, however briefly, to push my buttons in a sexy way.

It can be frustrating because the books have scenes which would be adorable/hot if said scenes were between two people who the audience likes, who actually like each other and want to be together and where consent is understood and relatively clear. I see other fanfic writers take those scenes and transport them into other fandoms, and make it work great.

Honestly, that seems fine to me. The things you mention ("masquerades, fancy suits, and British guys") have really wide mass appeal to readers. That's why James did it. It's like appealing to people who like coffee, puppies and naps, you're always going to have a really big demographic who is into those concepts.

No shame in getting turned on by erotica that explicitly touches on a lot of popular kinks. I mean, hell, I've never read them and never will (too heterosexual for me) but it sure gets a bad rap despite being erotica by a woman for women. Just wank to what you like.

I couldn't get into the books because the writing was so terrible. But let's be real, I'm turned on by plenty of badly written fanfic. I'm sure FSOG would have turned me on at some point if I'd kept reading.

I don't understand what there is to be ashamed of.

That does sound pretty hot, tbf

I've never read the books, but I have a friend who read the first one and, though she found it a chore to read and thought it sucked, she did say that there were some parts that were hot. The scene you described sounds really hot and I don't think you should be ashamed just because it's from Fifty Shades.

I don’t find it as bad as some of you seem to, but I’ve mellowed out a lot over the MCU compared to how I was half a decade ago. I think my mentality now is a lot closer to that of the casual moviegoer who quite frankly makes up the majority of the audience. These films are not character-driven dramas so as soon as the overarching plot needs to go in a certain direction, character nuance is going to suffer for it. Doesn’t help that they have SO MANY characters to deal with now compared to when the first Avengers came out.

I recently found out that a lot of the old "dramatic reading" youtube videos didn't actually use excerpts from the books, and since that was what I used to base my vehement dislike of the books on, I kinda feel like I HAVE to read them now. I've never felt more betrayed.

Really? Granted, I haven't watched a lot of dramatic reads in general, but I wouldn't have thought people would make passages up. One or two for comedy purposes, but not almost all of them.

And like I said, I got most of my knowledge of the books from Jenny Trout and other reviewers who quote large excerpts from the text, which would probably be enough to give you a sense of the story and prose without having to read it yourself. I'd explore that route first if you can.

it really is that bad tho. like idk who made stuff up but they really didn't need to, no matter the controversies there's just no denying that it's incredibly badly written

Just wanted to say I also love Jenny's recaps! I have read one of the 50 shades books (the last one) but only because I was given it.
