Things You Were Shocked To Learn

(Anonymous) 2019-09-08 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by me realizing from secret #2 that Haikyuu and Free are different things.

What are some things you were shocked and/or embarrassed to learn?

That misled is pronounced miss-lead. I always pronounced it missile-d in my head. I knew what it meant, I had just never said it out loud. And while I probably have heard it, I just didn't make the connection between the two words.

:) That's okay. Years ago, my sister was reading from a book and mispronounced the word "barroom" as buh-ROOM. We all laughed, but now EVERY TIME I see that word I begin to mispronounce it, then catch myself. It's been well over twenty years!

I don't think I've ever seen the word barroom! I had to google what it was because I didn't know what it was.

You mean miss-led, right? (Unless you mean lead as in a lead pipe, then never mind!)

English is so messed up.

I did mean lead pipe. I forgot about the other way lead us pronounced. Damn you English!

I used to have a similar problem with segue. "Seh-goo?"

I think I learned how to pronounce that because of Segways.

I always understood it in the way that miss-led (as in lead pipe) was past-tense, and miss-leed (as in leader) was present-tense? Or something like that... The more I think about it the more confused I get.

That Anastasia wasn't a Disney princess not because she wasn't popular enough to be in the official lineup, but because the movie hadn't been made by Disney at all.

This. And fuck... you can add in me thinking the Disney movie 'Fantasia', was called Anastasia, which was half of my confusion in the first place.
(I literally just found this out because I wanted to fact check what that Magic Mickey dancing with brooms movie was called)

That the actress who played Vasquez (the Latina BAMF) in Aliens was a white lady.

She was also John Connor's foster mom in Terminator 2 and the Irish mother that stays with her kids in their cabin while Titanic sinks because she knows they can't get out. James Cameron liked working with her (and Bill Paxton and a few others).

I knew about John Connor's foster mom, but not about Titanic.

Honestly, as fucked up as doing brownface obviously is, I don't really feel inclined to judge her for it. It was a different time in Hollywood, and you play the role you're given, especially when you're a working actor who's just happy to get a part. That said, I would definitely feel differently about it if the role were cast today.

That Simon Pegg voiced the Chamberlain in the new Dark Crystal series. His impersonation is fucking uncanny tbh, but I'm also glad they got someone who could get close to it since it's such a notable voice in the original.

I liked how his Chamberlain was spot on to Frank Oz. And I think Donna Kimball is doing a better job as Augra. Frank's Augra always sounded to me like an extra crotchety Miss Piggy to my ears.

It's such a dead-ringer that I legit paused the episode the first time I heard him and wiki'd the show just to make sure it really was him. Oh yeah she's really good too, just in general I think they've done a superb job with the voice-casting for this show, it helps to make the world feel even more alive.

I normally keep the volume of the shows I'm watching at night low, so I don't accidentally wake the bf(he's a light sleeper), but this one I just had to turn up to listen because I enjoyed every performance so much.

there is no person named Leslie in the song "Groovin". they just pronounced "endlessly" very badly so it didn't fit with the music.

A watched a movie recently that informed me that, like the holes in cheese, the doughnut hole is for your thumb. It's the only way to dunk a doughnut. Very educational.

Re: Things You Were Shocked To Learn

(Anonymous) 2019-09-09 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. Originally the hole in the doughnut was for sanitary reasons: frying them didn't cook the heart, so it had to be hollowed out first in order not to leave nasty bacteria inside.

Re: Things You Were Shocked To Learn

(Anonymous) 2019-09-09 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
But... How are you supposed to dip the doughnut if not for the hole?! Clearly your logic is flawed.

Re: Things You Were Shocked To Learn

(Anonymous) 2019-09-09 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Nonsense. There are doughnuts that don't have holes (jelly/custard filled, the eclair style ones, twists, apple fritters, etc.) and they're fine. Dough, if handled properly, is not going to be full of "nasty bacteria" that needs to be cooked to death. Even if there was an issue with a raw/doughy center, you could simply adjust the cooking time and/or temperature.

Hannibal wasn't much of an influence in the Roman Carthaginian war, despite being a brilliant tactician.
He's known to be one of the best generals history has to offer, but due to the Roman's response to his strength, Hannibal was cut off and generally unable to aid the overall war effort.
