1. They find the interaction between the two characters compelling
5. They want to explore the possibilities of a pairing

In regard to these, I must ask why seek the potential in a romantic form versus a platonic one. Obviously slash implies something more than simply an emotional bond and extends into a sexual one (as anything romantic relationship, no matter how pure, is simply developed through something sexual) Maybe I see some value in the emotional of the platonic without believing that the platonic must extend beyond the emotional into sexual territory for it to be the strongest emotional bonds. I mean I suppose that implies that all of the relationships must be 'hot' to extend into that territory.

Now, I have already brought up the situation in which fans have a difference to those that are of both, or specifically het. Namely, as I already mentioned, in cases which I have not assumed but instead discussed openly with friends who are fans of such, that it generally supports the individual’s disconnect between their own individual femininity and their desire for an emotional/romantic bond. I personally don’t see this as an issue that het fans would face. There are many slash fans that in many cases are highly anti-female, while they themselves are female. There are several slash fans that are also het fans that don’t show such a problem, but instead are more open to relationships in their rawest nature and recognize the relationship as ‘genderless’. Pure het fans simply can’t see past gender, which I feel to an extent can be understandable, as it is a core value as represented in most of society. Now, I also see slash as a general connection for lesbian fans as a way to connect with their homosexuality within a context that is more commonly recognized, as much of slash actually closely resembles more of an emotional bond that is more feminine than it is masculine. While there are certainly masculine relationships that can resemble certain slash scenarios, it is less common. I also believe it is their way to connect with a larger norm as femslash is less common in the fandom community.

Honestly, if there are no differences why would be there be fans that dictate themselves with such specific identities. Why is there a rift? I highly doubt the rift is based on purely a ‘misunderstanding’ as there must be a more attractive quality of one versus the other.

Actually for that matter I would like to address one more point that I feel is missing from your piece. Ironically, in many fandoms, I believe slash is also developed as the social norm, and to fit in they generally force themselves to enjoy such when it isn’t something they actually connect to. Now in maybe a more religious atmosphere of specific fandoms a slash fan may feel pressured to enjoy het, so this one I feel addresses both ways.

Speaking from a personal perspective, since of course that is truly the most accurate analysis I can relate to (lol), I generally find the value in all forms of relationships and I like to explore, generally, the depth of the relationship in it’s cannon form. While for social sake I play along with pairings, as I don’t take anything too seriously (because that becomes a little ridiculous), unless I truly feel motivated to challenge myself with making something ‘crack’-esque appear cannon, I generally try to work within the barriers of the work as that presents the characters truest nature.

Therefore I find myself betwixt all of these categories because, depending on what the cannon is, I go along with it because I have no social issues with it. Yet, to reach out and form a personal story to move along with the original work to fulfill personal desires works beyond something that can be simply addressed as ‘same’. Each choice made doesn’t have a sameness otherwise it would be the same choice.

why seek the potential in a romantic form versus a platonic one.

Because it's fun? I don't think you need a special reason...

Really, it's just a type of character development to explore. It's no different from exploring a friendship or a familial relationship.

Maybe I see some value in the emotional of the platonic without believing that the platonic must extend beyond the emotional into sexual territory for it to be the strongest emotional bonds.

Yeah, nothing wrong with that. It's the implication that something is lost, or worse, sullied when romance is introduced that annoys me.

I suppose that implies that all of the relationships must be 'hot' to extend into that territory.

I think you're looking at it from the wrong "direction", so to speak. It's not that we think that a relationship must be hot to be significant; we think a romance could be hot because their relationship is already significant.

it generally supports the individual’s disconnect between their own individual femininity and their desire for an emotional/romantic bond. I

Really? I can't say I've noticed this to be a major motivator in the slash/yaoi fandom (though I've heard a few fans mentioning it). And I've been in it for about nine years now!

There are many slash fans that in many cases are highly anti-female

Yeah, mostly the new, inexperienced (in fandom culture, that is) fans who are dazzled by their discovery of the slash/yaoi phenomenon. They tend to huddle together in parts of the fandoms until they learn better. Their behaviour is not approved of by the rest of the slash/yaoi fandom.

Pure het fans simply can’t see past gender

Really? I didn't know that. I don't think I've ever considered gender as a factor when connecting to characters.

much of slash actually closely resembles more of an emotional bond that is more feminine than it is masculine.

I don't like to use those terms, as I think they're social constructs that are ultimately not very good for either men or women. I'm going to be revolutionary and state that men have the same emotional needs as women.

Why is there a rift?

Is there such a big rift? Most (sane) fans tend to like both, if not in fanfic (I strictly read slash/yaoi or gen fanfic, but my favourite love story is still Pride and Prejudice). I mean, I can only speak for the slash/yaoi side, but the "ew, het" opinion is seen as idiotic, and so is valuing one type of relationship above another for other reasons than personal taste. That's not to say that these opinions don't exist, but they're not the general views of the slash/yaoi fandoms.

in many fandoms, I believe slash is also developed as the social norm

I think this is more true of certain communities in a particular fandom than the fandom itself. Ideally the fandom should be as open to slash/yaoi as to het, of course, but the balance will rarely be perfect, as one can't control people's tastes.

Yet, to reach out and form a personal story to move along with the original work to fulfill personal desires works beyond something that can be simply addressed as ‘same’.

Do you mean "same as the canon"? Because the essence of fanfic is, I think, "what if". How far people are willing to go in their exploring differs; some will be content with "what if this is what character X feels in this particular scene?" while others want to know "what if character X fell in love with character Y?" or even "what if Spiderman were a Japanese onmyouji?"

Some people would say that only some "what ifs" can be written plausibly. I think every "what if" is potentially possible; it's all in the execution. The important part is not what characters do, it's that they stay themselves while doing it.

Phew, that was lengthy!
