I went to the stupid fair for lunch with my coworkers. At least now I can use that as an excuse not to go to any more lunches for a while.

Not too bad! I went to lunch with my mom then worked in the afternoon. I'm about to make dinner, then go listen to a podcast.

I have a blocked duct in my eyelid (it's been there for months), and it's playing up today. It's not especially painful, just about the level of tapping on a bruise - but I get that little spike of discomfort every time I blink, and it's a huge pain in the ass.
Also, a friend asked me to hang out, and she picked the time, but she's currently late.

I've got a tooth that needs removing, but I can't get it pulled until October, and it's acting up today, so...yay.

Also, my niece keeps stealing my new glasses...she looks kind of adorable in them, but...I kinda need them. >_>

I had to add another employed physician to our owner distribution Workbook of Doom.

I hate this spreadsheet. I hate it so much. It's pivoting compiled data from another pivot from a program that talks to NOTHING and then there's a billion formulas allocating everything and SOMETIMES A FORMULA GETS DELETED and doesn't get discovered for months because there's, like, 30 tabs that all build off each other and good fucking luck, and then I go home and drink.

I’m mostly enjoying my new job; it looks like I might have more responsibilities and have to learn new stuff, but I’ll also get to do more fun things. But today something weird happened.

I’ve been getting the feeling that one of my new coworkers doesn’t like me much, even though we’ve barely interacted and I can’t think of anything awful or annoying I’ve done to or around her.

My new work location has a tiny staff area and I’ve been stowing my purse and lunch bag in the corner under the break room table. Today, my boss asked my tetchy coworker if I could use half the shelf she puts her stuff on (I didn’t ask him to or say anything about my stuff or her and I’m fine with keeping my things in the corner) and she BLEW UP.

Started yelling about contacting his supervisor, that we three needed to have a group discussion, just flipped the fuck out. I just stood there like ... “awkward, heh heh... ah...” and said I didn’t mind keeping my things where they were, but I’m not even sure she heard. My boss went “okay, boss” at her in a kind of sarcastic way and she’s been slamming doors and stomping around ever since. Everyone else, including new boss, have been nice to me and seem like good people... I feel like there must be backstory I’m missing.

Anon from yesterday. Still not doing great. But a friend suggested a counseling service that does it for free for those who can't afford it. So I'm going to see if I qualify.

Massive rain and thunderstorms here starting in the late afternoon. It let up in time for me to walk to my car to go home and wasn't raining hard when I got to the gym, but just when I was about to leave the gym, it started pouring harder than anything! I had to wait nearly half an hour before it let up enough to run to my car. There was some street flooding, but nothing serious on the way home. Fortunately I didn't need to run any errands and it hasn't rained much since. We're definitely going to get more storms tonight, though. Got a little water in the basement. I really need to stop putting off trying to alter the landscaping by that one corner of the house to help water drain away better.

I just found out this morning my mom has to go to the hospital and have a pacemaker put in. I didn't even know she was having problems w/ her heart before this.

Got a hair-cut - cut a great deal off but my hair's so long nobody'll notice; just was time for the damaged bits to go, so ... now it's "just" midback.

Also, took faaaaaaaar too long to find out where to buy a particular kind of alcohol I wanted ... to make a pie with. :/ But I did manage, so all in all a good day.

Piracy

So the endless debate on piracy has rolled around to my Twitter and Tumblr feeds once more, and I thought I'd bring it here! Sharing is caring <3

One of the points I think is very important to how people think of piracy is *what* is being pirated. Text books? Indie games? Blockbuster movies? Comics? Recently released novels? Limited release films? Old TV shows with no home release? All of these get different answers.
So what do you think?

I think stealing of any sort hurts everyone in the end by driving up prices and driving down wages.

IMO, the only time piracy is okay is when there is no legal avenue for you to obtain the thing. (For instance, a long-out-of-print CD, a game that has never translated for sale in your country, a TV show that has never been released on DVD, etc.)

Otherwise, if you can legally obtain the thing but choose not to do so and to pirate instead, you're an asshole.

I'm happy to pirate things I can't legally purchase (like Motorcity), or that don't have an official English language release. I also don't feel bad about pirating things which are exclusive to Netflix, because I pay for Netfix, I just want to have a copy that won't disappear if I stop paying for my account. I'd get it on DVD if I could.

I think context is important, yes. Local music scene and indie artists always get my dollars, as do newly released novels.

Things that are otherwise unavailable due to lack of distribution, licensing, out of print, things like that, those are free game.

I will re-purchase books if I wear out my old copy or there's a re-release with a cool cover. I'm usually good for a good quality legal copy of anything if I actually enjoy it. Give me access and a means to pay for you for it, and I have no problem paying for my entertainment. LET ME GIVE YOU MY MONEY.

Textbooks I buy used, photocopy the relevant parts, or pirate. Their value is insanely inflated and I don't see the value in buying a $180 text that we're only going to use a dozen pages of in class. That's just plain fucked up and I refuse.

I think that people should make honest, good faith efforts to support the people who make the things they like whenever and however they can. I don't generally have a strong moral objection to piracy if that basic concept is respected.

Basically, the harder it is to legally obtain something, the more justified I think people are in pirating it. I’ve had people pirate stuff for me, but I’ve always bought it as soon as I found a legal source.
