I thought the hybrid thing was well done in TVD.

Yeah, I was going to say. Legacies has a tribrid! And it's great. The point I'm making here is, everyone watch Legacies.

Yeah, I disagree with OP's opinion that it signals a lack of creativity. At least in TVD verse, the writers put thought into the mythology of how/why it would happen and what this unique creature would be like.

I understand wanting a diversity of creatures, but I think it's valid to enjoy new spins on popular creatures, too.

On the one had: I get you, it'd be nice to see some underappreciated monsters get some love because the supernatural genre is somewhat over-saturated with vampires and werewolves(for good reason since they're a staple monster of the genre, but some variation wouldn't hurt).

On the other: I find the idea funny and enjoy seeing what the movies/shows do with werewolf-vampire hybrids.

I will say, I think there are good reasons why werewolves and vampires are so predominant (with some ghosts and witches thrown in for good measure) - they're very straightforward and easy to use, and their thematic and emotional weight is really clear and easy to use.

There'd be a lot more practical difficulties about using a mummy or a black lagoon monster, for example. And if you're going to use a more obscure monster, that's going to bring with it a lot of explaining. It's just less simple.

Oh yeah I absolutely get why they're the most common, it's a lot easier from a practical standpoint to use vampires and werewolves because all you have to do is get some human-actors and either make them look pale/put pointy teeth on them, or add some prosthetics/CGI a big wolf and you're done! Very little expense and you can still put your own spin on them to make them more unique.

I'd just like to see some other mythical creatures get the spotlight in a movie/show for a change.

they're very straightforward and easy to use, and their thematic and emotional weight is really clear and easy to use.

This is a really good point. There's such a significant aspect of, like, "what we talk about when we talk about [vampires/werewolves]" that automatically comes with these sorts of stories. I would love to see a story about a lesser known monster come along that was so narratively clear and scintillating that the themes and resonances of that story became a part of the underlying pop-cultural understanding of said monster. But it's a hell of a slam dunk to pull off for an author/writer.

I agree, I find it uncreative when something uses vampire, or werewolves, in the fist place. No originality.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe writers and audiences just enjoy familiarity.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - And maybe ayrt finds sticking to familiar topics uncreative. Ayrt was expressing their perspective, your suggestion isn't mutually exclusive.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
True, there could be lots of reasons for fictional hybrids beyond "uncreative writers" and "people like familiarity".

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Only to a certain extent. Since even before Dracula, there has been hundreds of different interpretations of Vampires, dating all the way back to the centuries old mythology that created them. There has been so many repeats and rehashes that the only common trait they share is that they drink blood. Werewolves are lesser done, but if not existing as an arch rival to vampire beings, are human 99% of the time. They're either teen angst stories, or form fitted to transforming into a werewolf whenever they want for the sake of entertainment. There's paying homage to something, and then there's grinding it into dust because there is only so many ways you can possibly take any one thing.

Familiarity is something that brings you home, that you can relate to and understand. I don't know about you, but I didn't grow up on Twilight and Teen Wolf, so maybe the nostalgia's just lost to me. Either way, when popculture shifts the definition of what a vampire, or werewolf, actually is, there is very little familiarity left to be found anywhere.
Especially in the context of the secret, by combining two very common supernatural beings, you aren't creating anything new, or something that hasn't been done a million times before. There is so much untapped potential in the realm of mythology, and the world around us, that it'd just be nice to see something new for a change.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hard agree, OP.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Okay.... I hear the argument a lot but rarely see people suggesting what other, more obscure mythical beings they would like to see.

So, what are your favorite alternatives?
