I'd attempt to explain, but you sound more invested in implying it's weird than genuinely understanding how people do it.

Let me know if I should try.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
You sound weirdly defensive and offended.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the only one that got the same impression, from the other replies in this thread, so I don't think it's that weird.

It's clear to me at least, that OP hasn't tried to understand it before declaring it non-understandable, because anyone who has tried to RP or even asked RPers about it would get responses like several of the ones made below. There are ways to avoid those people, you're not always out there RPing with randoms - there are RP guilds who organize events for a reason - and things like raids and arenas are generally considered OOC areas to begin with.

To be clear, I'm not defensive and offended about MMORPG RPing in particular. I'd react the same way to someone going "how does anyone take forum RP seriously when all their usernames are dumb puns and people chat OOC everywhere?" I'd wonder and ask if they're genuinely interested in knowing the answer, before taking the time to explain to them, too.

I know the explanations for why they don't think it's immersion breaking, I just don't understand how it can not be. It's great if it works for them but I personally couldn't do it because I can't just ignore all the stuff around me in a game like that.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
If you had said it phrased like that, then I don't think people would be reacting to you as though you meant to call them weird. 'Cause your secret is phrased basically the same as somebody going "how can someone seriously enjoy something I don't? I just don't understand it!" and well, you can see how that comes across, even if not intended.

Do you actually want to understand? Or are you content to continue being baffled and you just wanted to express that to everyone? Is more attempts at explanation something you want to hear?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Most secrets are rethorical in nature. I also technically understand how they find enjoyment in this, I just can't imagine doing the same. Like when you say "I don't understand how people can enjoy pineapple on pizza". Obviously you can understand it because some people do enjoy it. But if you yourself can't stand pineapple on pizza, they can try explaining all the pros of pineapple pizza and why it's totally sooo good but you still wouldn't enjoy it. It's a figure of speech.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
When someone goes "I don't understand how..." then people's natural reaction is to try and explain. Even for liking pineapple pizza, a bunch of people are bound to come along and tell you "well, it's because it's tasty and let me explain why!" So the reaction isn't surprising to me.

Anyway, so the answer is, you in fact do understand it, you don't want any further explanation to get you to understand it more, and you just don't like it. Which for the record I think is totally valid, but would have been clearer to say from the start. I've nothing more to add in that case.

i mean you're still ignoring that it's not a universal experience to be surrounded by ooc players all the time, so id say you dont understand

I think some MMO's have the option to fully turn off all name-plates in the game, NPC and players, but yeah I do 100% get how it can be completely immersion breaking trying to RP some serious story when there's people hovering around with clearly out of universe names.

Also I just love the name Evilrooster24 in that screenshot, it's marvelous.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Also the people with ridiculous outfits/costumes. Like, I'm sorry, but it's hard to take anything seriously when there's someone in a fish costume doing a stupid dance in the background.

HDU that's clearly the character's fur-sona and they're doing a mating dance, duh.

Tbh it's the reason I always picked a quiet city+zone whenever I used to RP 'back in the day' on WoW because SW and Org were far too jam-packed to facilitate RP without heavily ignoring everything around our group, that and you'd be at risk of errant assholes deciding that jumping within your group and chattering away in /s about how dumb we all were was the height of comedy.

But I haven't RP'd in a long time in any MMO and I am now that dumbass with the fish on my head sometimes.

Look, if you don't know the sordid story of Nipple Sauce, the illegitimate heir of Nut Sauce, the current Duke of the Sauce Duchy, I don't know what to tell you.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly, that's not the part of the deal that matters to them?

IDK this doesn't seem complicated

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
for one a lot of them don't rp in hubs with all the non-roleplayers. it's ridiculously easy finding an area where no one jumps in your face
hell even in the capital cities in wow there's areas where you can rp in peace with no or barely any interruptions.

also it's not like... hard to ignore unless they start to troll you. i'm really wondering what setting you rp in that is more immersive? is text on screen more believable to you? or sitting in a room with your friends? i don't find either of those any harder or easier to roleplay in

Listen, LJ/DW/Tumblr RP where Batman's OOC username is GrumpyBatface and he for some reason inexplicably keeps an online blog and ignores the fact that other people on the same network are posting explicit Batman/Joker porn and spam bots keep posting comments telling him to buy dick pills is more immersive by far.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
There are people named Moonbeam, Kashton, and Raylee, your point is irrelevant.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I admit, I thought the idea of RPing in an MMO sounded really fun, so I tried it and... yeah, I agree with you, OP.

The main problem is that you're surrounded by other people you can't control. Like one of the above anons said, you might have a dancing person in a fish costume standing right behind you. Someone might be making Your Mom jokes in chat. Someone else may have a pet out that wanders right into the middle of your scene. Unless you only ever RP in private areas where no one else hangs around, these things are going to happen and for me at least, they totally ruined the atmosphere.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
The short answer is that all the other players become background noise. I mean, shit, even just in the games you're usually a Solitary Hero and you often go to these places that haven't been seen by humans in a millennia or something, and there's still a bunch of other people there with you. You honestly learn to just kind of not see them.

I RP in FFXIV a lot. There's even a character icon for it. No, most people won't join you so it's not like you can involve other people, but if you have a partner or a small group? It works incredibly well, actually.

But I don't really know why I'm bothering to explain it, because going by your thinly-veiled derision, I'm not sure it'll really matter to you how I feel about it.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's quite amazing how ridiculously offended a lot of you are and how much you appear to really, really want to interpret any "derision" into the secret. The only thing in there is genuine bafflement but no, you are just CONVINCED that someone's out to low-key insult you.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. But then RPers have issues, this is known.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I love rpg's, but hell if I'd ever play an MMORPG... Mr. Nipple's being a major reason.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Depending on the MMO you can also do instances and just have people with the lore-friendly names and such (I do this in GW2). But yeah out in open world it can be a lot harder. For me I don't get how people RP on tumblr with that format, but to each their own!
