If anything, wouldn't being able to replace parts with high-end robotics mean you have cash to burn? Or are there alternative methods of healing/replacement in this series? I haven't read it.

IIRC, it's kind of an experimental "ooh, dark magic!" kind of thing, which is weird considering they have androids too.
