If you hated the tropes in Cinder (Which I liked, hell, I liked 4/5 of these books), you'd REALLY hate "Scarlett".

Which one didn't you like? (I haven't read Fairest.)

I liked this series of what I read, with both Scarlet and Cress as favorites. Cinder was the main character I liked least.

It took me about 2 years to finish Scarlett. Glad I did, because I love Cress and Winter. Did you read Stars Above?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-14 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No, though looking over the short stories, I'm interested.

If anything, wouldn't being able to replace parts with high-end robotics mean you have cash to burn? Or are there alternative methods of healing/replacement in this series? I haven't read it.

IIRC, it's kind of an experimental "ooh, dark magic!" kind of thing, which is weird considering they have androids too.

IIRC, cyborgs have the ability to become superhuman (more strength, etc), so non-cyborgs, the majority, do what they can to keep their power. Basically, I think it's "get them before they realize their strength and get you."

I feel that way about a lot of YA - nifty tropes and concepts, but everything else is superficial and/or poorly executed. Because that's all you need to get readers now, apparently.

Reminds me of The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Interesting world-building but way too many people worrying over relationships instead of zombies.

Yeah, came here to say to say this. How often does YA delve into the sociopolitical structure of their worlds anyway? Those discussions will get in the way of romance!

I love this secret.

I thought she explained it pretty well? It's not "they're oppressed but who cares why!" it's "they're not considered human and so people don't have to treat them with any kind of decency and are free to exploit them as tools."

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-09-15 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
That's not an explanation. Why are people not considered human just because they have some prosthetic parts? And no, "Because other people are dicks" isn't an explanation for that.

Man, I just know I'd be having the exact same reactions as you OP. Just hearing what little context there is in the comments already has me gritting my teeth in annoyance. I almost wish I read the book, just so I could rage right along with you.

I feel like that's kind of oversimplifying things. I mean, mostly we see ONE crummy person (the cruel step mom), but the impression I got was that most people felt that cyborgs were a subset of androids, which literally ARE robots/property, instead of being a subset of people. It's a bit more than "some prosthetic parts" to them. It's not general dickery, it's more a cultural stance on transhumanism. But if that wasn't explicitly stated or clear to you then it wasn't clear to you. *shrug*
