Utena did it before. And much better.

Having not seen Utena yet, I can't comment! I've only watched the film, which doesn't seem to stand on its own very well.

While I'll admit they they're similar and perhaps started with a similar theme, they both took different paths. I think they succeeded equally. Is it a crime to love both?

Apparently it is. *Goes to jail. Does not collect $200.*

Most people I know who watched both say the opposite, not the first part obviously but the better part.

I am watching Utena now though so we will see.

Really? From what I've seen on 4chan or the like is that they seem to prefer Utena... but then again, they may just enjoy it more due to the delicious womanizer Akio.

Well I wouldn't go by opinion on 4chan for most things but even before I started Princess Tutu I read in many places how it's an improvement over what Utena tried to do.

Well, Princess Tutu is more focused but I personally prefer Utena because I enjoy it more; I find its writing and atmosphere more accomplished; the visual design is a lot more stylistic and the symbolism satisfyingly abstract. On the whole, it's just a more "artistic" piece of work.

Disclaimer: I personally have no opinion on Princess Tutu. The show wasn't my favorite but I can see why people would love it. Utena, on the other hand, has a very stylistic direction and relatively poetic writing; I just love the melodramatic atmosphere and abstract imagery. Regardless, I wouldn't consider it superior. Utena and Princess Tutu are just different shows, they're not in a competence or anything.

*Shrugs* it's not my opinion either just what I heard from other people. I am only on episode 7 of Utena right now and enjoying it so far. And actually I see more similarity with Rose of Versailles than Princess Tutu so far.

Early Utena is indeed similar to Rose of Versailles. As the series progresses, though, it just delves more and more into surrealism. By the end of the second arc, all similarities with RoV beyond the superficial should have ended.

My initial reason for saying I know most people say Princess Tutu is better to anon was not to claim it was but just to show that there are different opinions on the matter out there.

They didn't handle the same themes nor in the same direction. Princess Tutu is a fairytale trapped in a fairytale and they fight against the Narrator. I love both shows but they are NOTHING ALIKE except for using Princes and handle sense of self-roles (and again, in a different direction).

They're about two different things. Utena is about the Patriarchy, and Tutu is about characters in a story being aware that they're characters in a story. The two series may be similar thematically, but it's not really fair to compare them.(Personally, I liked Tutu better, just because I felt that it was very well put-together as a whole. Utena struggled a bit with pacing, in my opinion.)
