I- I know but. Her politics are just sickening to me. Not only because I'm a woman, but... advocating charging for rape kits? Trying to not only make all abortion illegal, in all cases, but also supporting the movement to have several forms of birth control labelled as abortion? All her stances on women's issues are just so much Do Not Want, it would be funny if it weren't so... no.

In a non-women's-issue area, she likes the idea of people chasing down animals in helicopters, terrifying an exhausting them, and then shooting them when they can't run anymore.

ah! You know him?

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've heard she didn't want to charge the women themselves, but their health insurance, if they could pay for it. I'd like to know more information on it, but I don't really trust a TV ad to give me that. I'm also pro-life/anti-abortion/whatever you'd like to call it...I don't know about the birth control thing, it would depend on what she meant.

I also don't have an issue with hunting.

I do I dooooo. I need to reread/catch up~ (also lazy RPer)

Palin "has absolutely no problem with the state paying for evidence gathering," but the issue is that a rape kit is "more than evidence-gathering" because it also provides EC. [The Daily Kos] says that the line Palin "toed was basically this: no way, no how, no public funding at the municipal, state or federal level for rape kits that contain EC," adding that the "only possible reason behind" her "consistent refusal to fund rape investigation kits with taxpayer money is that they contain" EC, "which her religious fundamentalism views as tantamount to an abortion."

Basically, this covers both the rape kit question and the birth control thing. Palin considers morning-after pills in the case of a woman being raped to be abortion. She refuses to support such things. She also supports the movement that is trying to have such things legally labelled as abortion and therefore made illegal when abortion is illegal.

I'm not anti-life or pro-abortion. I don't think it's something that should be used as birth control. However, in the case of rape, abortion being available in the first trimester would avoid untold psychological damage in many cases. And in the case of a woman whose life is in danger because of an unsafe pregnancy, abortion had damn well better be an option. I was friends with a young woman who chose to go through with a pregnancy despite being told that both she and the baby were at risk of dying, and they both did. Abortion is never a good thing, but trying to take away the option from cases like that is placing importance of the possible life of an unborn child over the life of the mother. (As you can see, mostly my problem with the abortion issue is that too many people take it as an across-the-board, all abortion should be illegal or none of it should be thing, and it... really shouldn't be.)

I don't have an issue with hunting, either. Even hunting for sport. But this isn't hunting, this is cruelty to animals. It's basically terrifying the creature (usually wolves) for hours, running it to exhaustion until it collapses, and then gunning it down. That I have major issues with; if you ever see video of someone doing it, it's heartbreaking.

I highly support that, it's a great series~

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I know this is a very, very, very unpopular opinion, but...I don't really support the morning after pill. I can understand why people would, so I'm a little more neutral on that, but I don't support it.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. It's horrible, and I would never say that I would want something like that to happen. The thing is, I see a unborn child as a life, too, and the idea of assigning more worth to either the child or a mother...I don't know how to decide that. I don't know how to say "this one is worth more".

The hunting thing does sound pretty extreme. I don't think I could say I'd support that.

It's an unpopular opinion because it's fucking stupid and held by people with no medical knowledge of what the morning after pill IS.

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, maybe that's true. I've never claimed to be an expert. I probably need to do some more research.

You don't support the morning after pill? Even in the case of rape to make sure that the mother doesn't have to carry her rapist's bastard child to full term? What?

How about not believing everything that is spoon-fed to you by the media and the Daily Kos?

She supports abortion for reasons of medical necessity, and she's never wanted birth control labelled as abortion. Ah, and the charging INSURANCE for rape kits was a statewide policy in Alaska until fairly recently. Which, you know, makes sense since you need qualified medical personnel to administer those.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
All right, I'll give her medical necessity.

However. She did indeed come out and say she had no problem with the government paying for rape exams, but because the kits included ECs, she refused to allow it. Because they contain morning after pills. In her mind, birth control = abortion.

She also stated, when her daughter was fourteen years old, that even if her daughter was raped she would not support her having an abortion... which apparently also considers administering a morning after pill.

She also says she will fund only abstinance-only programs in schools, despite the fact that it has been proven that teaching kids abstinance-only does not reduce sexual activity, teen pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease.

Little tidbit for people who have no idea of our country's own history: abortion was in fact illegal from the late 1800's through 1973! And guess what? It didn't reduce the number of abortions. At all. It simply increased the number of deaths caused by women getting illegal abortions, or attempting to perform them on themselves. Here's some interesting facts about Roe vs Wade (http://socialistworker.org/2005-2/562/562_06_Abortion.shtml). Just in case anyone wants further proof that making something illegal doesn't actually solve shit, even after everyone already knows about the drug wars and the total fuckup that was the Prohibition.
