Because maybe they want more than just canon. I may not write fic for the same reason that people who don't ship canon do, but that just means my fandom experience is different. Just because you don't see it that way means others don't.

Now granted I am not "Canon is the only way and you are evil if you don't", but more often than not that I like the canon ships and ship them, if I don't I tend to stay within the realms of gen.

And that doesn't even get to how there is a fandom experience that does not involve shipping and pairings. Fandom is bigger and more diverse than just one subset of fans.

Exactly! Which is why I can't understand why those who can only bear to think about that one subset bother with fandom. I have lots of shows that I enjoy, but I'm not a part of their fandoms. Babylon 5, X-files, Supernatural, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings. Love em all -- but I don't do their fandoms. Some of it is because I'm satisfied with the canon plot and characters. Some of it is because there isn't enough of what I look for in fandom going on in that particular fandom.

But I don't throw a snit because someone ships something I don't like. And every time I do see someone who is annoyed because a lot of people are doing things in fandom she doesn't like, I just want to hit her with a clue-bat that she doesn't have to hang out in fandom to enjoy a show.

Because they want to connect with others in that fandom who feel the way that they do, which is why people join fandom in the first place.. My point was that they belong to a different subset of fandom then you do. Fandom is not just for people who want to bend canon or write non canon pairings.

Neither do I, and despite the loud and craziness of it, most people don't throw snits about what people are shipping or having different preference. Yes people who find fandom annoying and aggravating should probably stay out of it, but that isn't relegated to just canon shippers and what not. I personally don't understand how people who loathe a source material hang out in that fandom, but they do what they want.

I guess my point was that I find the idea "that if you ship canon then fandom is not for you" to be kind of idiotic, it just might not be a part of your fandom, doesn't mean that there isn't a fandom or a place for those people.

As far as I'm concerned, the canon pairing is just another pairing. And Gen is great, and so is porn. It's all a matter of taste. If you agree with that then we have no argument with each other.

If however you are one of those who thinks that canon pairings are intrinsically better than other pairings, and that Gen is the only right way to go if you don't like the canon pairing -- well then, I think Fandom is not a good place for you. There are official forums where you can hang out and meet likeminded people, and bubble over the show. Fandom lite as it were. And it's a probably a better place for those people to go, because otherwise fandom is going to spend a lot of time offending them, and if they make noise about it, it's going to spend a lot of time rightfully pounding them into the ground.

I don't personally care what other people's preferences are or which is "intrinsically better" then any other preference because I don't think like that or view it like that. I know what my preferences are but I don't hold them up as better then anyone else's nor does the fact that people ship or think differently tick me off.

I think I disagree with you on what Fandom is, because those fanboards you say are "Fandom lite" are still Fandom, just a different part then the one you are saying. So yes those people wouldn't be welcome in your part of fandom and they shouldn't be coddled for it, but there might be another part of Fandom that is more conducive to their interests.

Man I wish there were more people like you out there. :)

The OP however, doesn't appear to agree withe either of us. She's one of those people who thinks its insane to ship something that obviously never was going to happen in canon and the fact that there exists a major ship outside of canon "bugs" the hell out of her. To her I say, the way out of fandom is thataway.

I personally think the OP is a troll just trying to fuel a stupid drama that really makes neither side look good, so I can't really pay it that much mind.

Perhaps... but, and here's the painful thing. One of my close dear friends is one of these. She finds it painful and upsetting to hear of any pairing that breaks up her otp which is either canon, or the most canon likely pairing if the series is gen.

It makes it very tough to discuss fandom around her. For a while she and I shared a ship -- for her it was exclusive, for me it was one of a many, but I could talk about her ship and admire it with her, even though she couldn't discuss any of my favorite ships or characters. She's since grown tired of our mutual ship and moved on to other shows and pairings that don't appeal to me.

She has essentially taken herself out of fandom these days because our circle of friends, myself included, can't get interested in her ships and she can't bear to see us talk about ours. Though we chat about RL things, we don't talk about fandom anymore.

Well people feel certain things, and your friend obviously took the right path in taking herself out of something that was bothering her. I actually think it is more of a matter of people becoming overinvested and attached to their view and their way that to have those things questioned is like an attack on them. And that is where the messiness and the ridiculous butthurt and pain comes from. For some reasons certain factions of different fandoms have kind of absorbed their ships as their identity which I find really silly but people are weird and grow attached to weird things.

The OP I think is breeding off the wank that has been showing up here re:Avatar shipping, in general, I feel like the last line is really clue there. They talk about starting a war if they said that, and that I think shows what they were hoping for, because I think the response to their secret would have been obvious. Most people, even those who seem to agree with the not liking Zutara part seem to think the OP is nuts.
