Fights or problems caused from people not sharing five minutes of information.

Someone falling in love with the enemy and completely betraying everything they know.

Love triangles. They're just boring, and never end in a believable way. The "ousted" party always ends up all like "oh it's fine it was never that serious/i thought of you as a sibling all along!/etc." when sometimes like... it's messy, people get hurt. That's life.

Ugly ducklings. Obsession with looks in the first place.

Requisite Heterosexual Romance jammed into absolutely fucking everything even if there is zero need for romance at all.

Indicating that a woman is a nerd by having her always wear skirts/dresses and never pants.

Re: Based on 2

Character gets knocked up and vaguely considers having an abortion but no, they just can't, it's too awful. Because rearranging your entire life and all your goals, and potentially fucking up the life of your future child is totally better than having an abortion. Fuck right off with that bullshit.

If a woman doesn't want to have an abortion that's totally her choice, but I hate the near-ubiquity of the "abortion is awful and even when it's an option you shouldn't actually view it as a real option" message that hollywood likes to puke out over and over and over.

Sadly, Hollywood has puked out a lot of harmful messages over the years. They're getting better, but looking back can be quite the cringefest.

I'm trying to write a story where a character (fairly early in the story) discovers she's pregnant and seriously considers an abortion. I want her to actually give it proper consideration, visit Planned Parenthood, get all the brochures and whatnot. I want her to think about her finances, her housing situation, lack of family support, all that stuff.
I refuse to have her think, at any time, about the fetus being an "innocent life" or "(husband)'s baby" or any horseshit like that. I am so tired of that garbage.

That's usually just an excuse to have a new baby plotline though, not push an anti-abortion message. On the other hand, there's rarely a need for a character to get pregnant and get an abortion unless it's specifically to do a pro-choice story. "Character gets pregnant but just goes and has an abortion, everything continues as normal" doesn't add anything of substance to a show.

Everyone I know who's had an abortion has ended up suffering with their mental health because of it. It's not exactly a small decision and you have to live with it for the rest of your life. Men can fuck right off with their opinions on it but in general we should never treat it as an easy option.

Re: Based on 2

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
The mental suffering comes from the stigma and internalized belief that they've killed their baby (even if they've always been pro-choice and don't think they believe it's murder) not from the abortion. That's not their fault and their feelings are valid, but it's a vicious cycle that won't be broken if we keep saying abortion should never be treated lightly because it causes mental health issues.

Women can and do get abortions and don't feel bad about it at all. Normalize it in fiction, and less real women will have mental breakdowns over their abortions.

I have had an abortion. I was 16. No mental trauma, best thing I ever did. The majority of people who have abortions have no trauma from it whatsoever.

the hanakiri (sp?) aka flower disease. Hate the trope as it's simultaneously stupid and horrifying.

Harems as it reminds me that boys like harems in their fiction. What if my boyfriend whould like to have one if he had an option?

Re: Based on 2

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
The flower petal disease is hanahaki.

Re: Based on 2

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Only boys like harems in their fiction? What about all the reverse harems? Would you like a boy-harem if you had an option? I bet a lot of girls would.

Re: Based on 2

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
The problem they're having with harems in fiction is that it reminds them that their boyfriend might want one.

sad boner confessional: "I'm a professional middle-aged guy in a loveless marriage with a woman that I'm emotionally indifferent around. I had an affair with a manic pixie dream girl and ruined my life. LET ME TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT."

What if the manic pixie dream girl turns out to be a manic nightmare girl who torments the man for his sins?

Otherwise yeah, same here, I dislike that trope very much.

I feel like 90% of Hollywood output is various forms of sad boner confessionals.

So, American Beauty, and... nothing else I've ever been able to remember any time someone says this is a trope. Can you name other examples?
