What fanfic tropes can you not stand?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Or are your squicks?

Not really a squick, but I just... don't care about ABO. I don't like a lot of the tropes associated with it, and have never really come across any fic so well written that the ABO was overlookable.

Rape to love. Dub con portrayed as not really dub con. Basically, when an author doesn't seem to understand that there are consent issues going on in their fic. If things are labelled properly? Fine. May not always be my cup of tea, but I have no problem with it. But if it appears as if the author thinks that something is consensual when it very clearly is not? Then I get annoyed.

Humiliation. I can't stand that in anything really.

Oh agreed. Not my thing at all.

Seconding this. Also, it really bugs me the way humiliation and degradation constantly get lumped in with D/s. I love me some mild, informal D/s - nothing scene-y, just the basics of a character who's more subby in the bedroom and a character who's more dom-y in the bedroom, and wow are they ever compatible. But so much of the time, a D/s dynamic automatically means the dom-y character is going to start calling the subby character a slut and a whore and saying how they're going to make them fuck other people and they'll probably love it and all that, and it's just like...urgh. Why must these things go together?

YES! YES! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE D/s but so many fics add humiliation to and it makes me cringe.

I'm seeing a lot of ageplay fics lately, and I just can't. I need my stories to be about two adults acting like adults.

Same. I really do not see the appeal. But hey, at least it's easy to blacklist!

People who warn but not... IDK, at the right level?
I read a fic that had 'mention of animal abuse' in the tags, and what it actually had was an extremely graphic description of a horrible, genuinely sickening, act of cruelty. It was possibly the worst act of animal cruelty I've ever seen in fiction. And now, because the author didn't tag appropriately, it's in my head and I'm never going to get it out.

There's also the much more common problem of tagging a fic with 'dubious consent', and then I read it and go, "Uh, no, that's full-on rape. She's been drugged and abducted and is being menaced with a large knife, how are you not getting that this is rape."

re rape in fics, I noticed that if a scene is not too upsetting or if the character somehow enjoyed themself it tugged dubcon even though it's clearly rape irl.

No dude, that's called "noncon".
In fanfic, rape is "Actual vaguely realistic sexual assault where one or more parties does not give meaningful or informed consent". Noncon is your bodice ripper business "Oh no we mustn't, stop at once, oh that's nice keep going". Dubcon is, like, maybe they're both tipsy? Or one of them's not sure about it but doesn't tell the other? Or it's otherwise a bit fuzzy.
There's a reason the archive warning on AO3 is "Rape/Noncon". Noncon is sexy rape. I have no issue with people writing noncon. I just want them to know that, yeah, when you threaten someone with a large knife into staying on the bed and not fighting back, what's happening is not is any way dubiously consensual.

Huh, I thought "no -> keep going" is dub-con. I guess I've never read fic archieves guidlines and just learned it this way by fandom osmosis. I'll brush up on my definitions if I ever publish something along these lines.

Rape to love.

Humiliation of any kind, and most dirty-talk in smut makes me cringe tbh.

Virgin characters being written like they have no idea what a dick/vagina is, or like they're gonna faint at the mere suggestion of sex. Like I do not get the appeal of that at all, not only is it outrageously OOC most of the times I've seen it, it's also so weirdly childish I find it offputting as hell.

Mpreg, unless it's crack.

Kid-fic, sometimes it's okay, but most of the time I'm just... not interested, lol.

Most coffee shop/high-school AU's, I just find them so boring.

God, this. Just because somebody's a virgin doesn't mean they don't have any interest in or knowledge of sex. It would be very nice indeed to see more virgin characters that aren't so freaking awkward about this stuff.

It'd also be nice to see characters whose reasons for virginity aren't tied to their religion or saving themselves for marriage. Not that there's anything wrong with those reasons, just that those aren't the only ones people have for being a virgin.

The sad thing is in one of my fandoms the half of my OTP that was a virgin wasn't shy or awkward about it, he was closeted so just hadn't had sex because of that, yet a surprising percentage of the fic still keeps writing him as some blushing maiden who doesn't know what a dick is or has never had a dirty thought in his life. Despite the fact that in canon he's the one that initiates sex the first time and isn't remotely shy about it, if anything his boyfriend was more hesitant about it because he has hang-ups about people leaving or using him.

It's like fandom only has two modes with characters when it comes to sex: massive sluts who sleep with literally anyone of their type, or prudes who wouldn't be caught dead even thinking about finding someone hot. Like, there is way more room to work with in-between that folks.

shitting on other characters and turning them into unrepentant jerks to make the author's fav look better.

Ugh, this. Especially in the case of pairings. It's like they're hoping constant, out-of-character moments will be enough to distract the audience from how terribly written the rest of the story is.

I like consentacles but I'm really not into impregnation or lactation which seems to go with some stories.

ABO: If I wanted that I'd read some honest furry fic instead.
