I've been watching the MCU almost since the start & I feel pretty much the same. Steve is my fave (though I do love Tony too) & without him, it's not home. I'll keep watching til I completely lose interest, but I'm already at the point where I don't watch during opening weekend & I only watch once. I don't own a lot of the newer ones (I used to buy them all immediately).

I get that. I'm one of those burned-out people (I wasn't that into the MCU to begin with, but even as a casual fan it got to be too much), but I can see this. I'm all for passing on the torch to a new crowd, but by virtue of being new they fundamentally lack the emotional investment the older characters have built up in audiences. We don't comprehend or care as much about their relationships with the other newer Avengers or their personal struggles or leadership styles. We'll presumably get to see all that, of course, but it's kind of like going on a first date or something.

I thought I was going to feel that way, but some of the new characters have really struck a cord with me. T'Challa and Carol and Strange mostly. I'm looking forward to what comes next for them.

I still enjoy the MCU, but frankly, without Steve it just won't be much fun. I'll watch the Bucky/Sam show, and anything to do with Carol, but....meh.

I get it, OP.

I really thought Carol would have a bigger role in Endgame, given how much they hyped her and her powers, but she didn't really get to do anything meaningful in the film. Even towing the ship Tony was on back to Earth could have easily been written out; Tony built an Arc Reactor in a cave out of spare weapon parts, why couldn't he build one in space out of spare ship and weapon parts and jerryrig the ship to run on that? You could still have the 'oh no life support is gonna fail we'll never make it' drama as they just barely make it back to Earth. Even in the fights against Thanos, she doesn't get to do anything! Cut her scenes, and the movie remains EXACTLY THE SAME.

...I'm clearly still very mad and salty about this, and need to vent my frustrations. I have very little trust left to extend to the MCU

I feel the same. Totally wasted her character. Totally wasted Tony's genius. I know they filmed her Endgame stuff before Captain Marvel was filmed, but COME ON.

It's really very frustrating.

I understand that.

Beyond the whole thing of even getting Disney+, I'm not interested in any of the shows. Right now, I'm planning on watching the next Black Panther (because the first was great and I liked many of the characters), but it almost feels like a separate thing from the MCU. I'm also still planning to see the next Spider-Man, but who the hell even knows how that's connected now? And that's about it. And like you, I like Black Widow, but given what happened to her, I can't say I really want to see a Black Widow movie anymore.

I think the movies could have gone without Tony a lot sooner.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-27 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely seconding this. To me Tony and Steve were like the brain and heart of the MCU. Everybody else is pretty great too, but now the whole MCU just feels a bit inert.

Honestly, I wish RDJ was willing to play bit parts in other people's MCU movies for another decade.

TBH I sort of wonder if it isn't so much that he's not willing to do it as that Disney's not willing to pay him to do it.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-27 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's possible. I mean, it was very much not Disney's choice for him to leave the MCU entirely. Nor was it Disney's choice for Chris Evans to leave.

But it's possible that the amount they'd have to pay RDJ for minor appearances wasn't worth the money it would cost for said minor appearances. In the sense that people will absolutely go see a movie for Tony Stark, but will they go see a movie for 3 minutes of Tony stark?

But actually, no, I think if Disney thought having Tony Stark in their MCU films was an option that was open to them, they would never have killed him. Because then it's not an option any more, and I don't think they would have closed that door on themselves voluntarily.

Just losing Tony was enough to make me question my commitment to the MCU. He's such an integral part of it. But losing Tony, Cap, and Nat is way too much. I probably will watch the future MCU movies, but not in theater.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-27 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I still love the MCU, and plan on watching the future movies, but yeah, without Steve and Natasha, it just doesn't feel the same to me. I didn't care for the direction they took Thor (and his franchise in general) in, and most of the shows just aren't that appealing to me. I'm interested in the Falcon and Winter Soldier show for Bucky, Sharon and Zemo, and that's about it.

I really, really hope they don't give Thor a big part in GotG3, because him interacting with the Guardians was my least favorite part of Infinity War. I don't want to watch two-and-a-half hours of mean-spirited sniping and fat jokes.

However, I did love Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel, and I'm hoping that upcoming movies like Black Widow, The Eternals and Shang Chi, as well as the Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel Sequels, will rekindle at least some of the magic for me. I also hope they do another Ant-Man and the Wasp movie.
