nightscale: Starbolt (Marvel: Sam Wilson)

YMMV and all, but I consider the fact that he's otherwise an 'ordinary' guy(as far as superheros movies go) but still throws himself into the fray along-side all these super-powered individuals to be an example of why he's a good fit for the shield.

Yeah, he's not got Cap's powers, but he absolutely has the same kind of determination to do the right thing and bravery that Steve has, that more than makes him an acceptable replacement in my eyes. But hey we can agree to disagree and all.

And tbh from a in-universe perspective he's gonna have plot-armor like the rest of the non-durable heroes do in these movies.

ITA that his personal character is well suited to being Cap. I just think it's silly that a regular human is supposed to replace a superhuman in a superhuman role when his physical abilities can't remotely equal a superhuman's abilities. It doesn't matter how strong his heart and his spirit and his bravery are: he's still physically a human with human limitations. The writers' utter detachment from the practical realities of what the job entails and what the physical limitations of humans are makes me roll my eyes and go "oh marvel."

But! I freely acknowledge that this is an ongoing issue with superhero stories almost across the board. Sam becoming Cap isnt the first or even the fiftieth time the mcu has treated strength and vulnerability like traits that can be wildly adjusted at will, or outright ignored.

Sam is true and good and didn't need to be jacked juiced like Steve did, (Sam is more of a hero) because he doesn't have any powers and still goes to bat every time to help and protect people Sam is a true hero anyway he helps veterans and all as well some heroes don't need powers to be heroes

I take no issue with any of this. Sam's strength of character is insane. But he's still a human who's been given a job that frequently nearly killed superhuman Steve.

I mean, I think I'm a good person, but if a bouncer was retiring you wouldnt hire me to replace him. He's literally four times stronger than me. If some big dude gets belligerent and I try to bounce him, I'll sprain my wrist on his face, and he'll break my orbital bone with his knuckles.

At the end of the day, it's the kind of thing that the superhero genre constantly writes around anyway. It's not really any worse than the existing power disparity between, like, Cap and Thor, or Cap and Strange. It's an artifice of the genre: conflicts are written in such a way that everyone has a chance to be useful. Because combat in superhero stories is basically a narrative function anyway.

Well... he does have the Falcon rig - it's not just flight, it had enhanced vision capabilities as well, which we see when he's in conflict with Antman. Wilson also has a lot of emotional intelligence (used to work as a therapist for combat vets) and - while it's certainly *satisfying* to see someone punch bad guys, the skill set that lets a hero *talk them down* is really. fucking. useful.

Is my opinion.

Yeah, but that comparison is like saying Captain America isn't much use because he's not Iron Man. Different people have different super-skills and that's why the teamwork. If Captain America just meant an identical set of powers you could give it to any super-strong person.

Different people have different super-skills and that's why the teamwork.

I mean, this is a nice idea? But it doesn't really go very far, practically speaking. And this is not an issue that's specific to Sam. I've always found it really jarring that the regular humans can be in the same fights as the superhumans. Because no, no they cannot. At least not the hand-to-hand combat parts. The first time a regular human gets hit by a superhuman, they probably die - as one does when they take a blow that's equivalent to a sledge-hammer wielded by a power lifter. And the difficulty a regular human would have in generating enough force to do any real damage to a superhuman is considerable.

It's an area of superhero stories where my suspension of disbelief really breaks down.

I also had this thought, anon. Ofc, it will be handwaved somehow, but frankly speaking, I wished that they would at least get rid of the shield and gave him a different weapon - I don't think he's theoretically supposed to find it as easy as a guy with SUPERSTRENGTH to throw it around. But, well, we'll see what they wil do with all of this - they might lean more into Sam's strengths...?

I don't think he's theoretically supposed to find it as easy as a guy with SUPERSTRENGTH to throw it around.

Right?!

But yeah, if they at least make an effort to lean into Sam's strengths, and acknowledge that this job is a lot trickier and a lot more dangerous for Sam than it was for Cap, I can probably roll with it.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not like Cap could fly, so Sam does has that on him.
