Not conforming to what society says a woman has to alter her natural body to look like does not equal not taking care of yourself.

If you're a guy, your attitude fails. If you're a girl, it fails even worse. I would have to have pretty much NO sense of self-worth to subject my (sensitive, allergy and exema-prone) skin to the constant rashes, dryness and irritation that shaving/waxing produces on my legs and under my arms.

IAWTC. :3

Seriously, if we were meant to be hairless, we would have been born that way.

And furthermore, I am fucking sick of people who judge me because I have leg hair. For god's sake - would I look more attractive to these bitches if my legs were red, blotchy, covered crusty, oozing cracks? Because that's what happened the first (and last) time I caved to peer pressure and had them waxed.

Agreed so hard.

Re: 167

[identity profile] quasiadastra.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This. My skin has very similar reactions, on top of being allergic to shaving creams and whatnot. So, really, do I want swollen itchy hands from applying said products on top of the swollen and itchy legs? Nope.

Hear, Hear! :)

Re: 167

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. Who cares about people that don't shave? Just don't cosplay if you're hairy. Completely different shit, the character is hairless. You are not.

Re: 167

[identity profile] gnimaerd.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never cosplayed in my life and don't intend to. I don't give a shit about that bit of secret. My hackles were raised about the implication that a woman who doesn't shave her legs/under arms must automatically be a slob who has stopped giving a shit about her appearance and doesn't take care of herself, neither of which are true for me or any other of the many, many women I know who choose not to shave, whatever their reasons are.

>Fandom Secrets
>Fandom

I don't see what "shaving" has to do with fandom. However, cosplay and looking as closer to the character as possible is more relevant.

Re: 167

[identity profile] gnimaerd.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, but the secret seems to be saying that the reason the OP (you? whatever) was so disgusted by this was NOT about the person not looking like the character they were cosplaying, but because they supposedly weren't 'taking care' of themselves. And I quote:

'What happened to like taking care of yourself?'

thereby not making this about fandom, but making it about the OP's opinions of women who don't shave.

If their intention was to talk about the need to be accurate when cosplaying, they would have said 'shave or not on your own time - it's your business - but when you're cosplaying a hairless character, if you're hairier than this guy you're doing it wrong'.

Re: 167

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
But what are your thoughts on yaoi crossplay?

Or alternately, is it okay if a white girl wants to cosplay from Fullmetal Alchemist, but not from Sailor Moon, because she's not Japanese?

Re: 167

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Crossplay, like Man-Faye, is mostly intended to be a joke. To make fun the character, basically.

And anime characters never look asian, silly. They do look hairless, though.

Re: 167

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've...seen a lot of non-joke crossplay, actually?

Re: 167

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
And they're girly, very androginous boys with shaved legs and arms. Your point?

Re: 167

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I have you around to tell me exactly what I have and haven't seen myself.

Re: 167

(Anonymous) 2008-10-19 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I know a crossplayer or two who would be severely offended if they read this.

Re: 167

[identity profile] sherarara.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for pointing this out - there are valid reasons for not shaving that have nothing to do with laziness. My own is that I would rather do something else with that 20 minutes every day (I have dark hair and a lot of it. When did shave back in high school, this is what it took to look like all the blonde girls I went to school with).

When I cosplay, I don't shave, just like when I wear a skirt, I don't shave. If you can't handle it, OP, don't look. No one is making you.

Re: 167

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
But the difference is that when you cosplay, you generally WANT people to look at you so it's kind of like saying "look at me but don't." If you're going to a con, why not just take that extra 20 minutes to shave? It's not like doing it every day. Hell, I never shave my legs in the fall and winter, but if I'm going to be cosplaying you'd better believe that I will.

Re: 167

[identity profile] sherarara.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I wouldn't cut the hair on my head for a costume either.

Re: 167

(Anonymous) 2008-10-19 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Shaving =/= getting a haircut. I don't understand why it's such a huge deal to take a few minutes to do something to make your costume more accurate.

Re: 167

[identity profile] sherarara.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think you missed the point of what I was trying to say - some of us just want to walk around in a costume and don't much care to change our physical appearance beyond that. I wouldn't change my hair color or cut in order to have infinitesimally greater accuracy, just as I see no reason to shave my legs for the same reason. It's a "huge deal" because it makes me something that I'm not, and while I concede that dressing up as a character is participating on some level in just that, I'm comfortable enough with my own self that I'm not very concerned with letting the character's persona subsume me. Shaving my legs and/or armpits really isn't going to make or break my costume except in the most superficial way. This doesn't mean I don't take care of myself, it means that I'm perfectly happy being who I am, which includes occasional lapses in Weeaboo-ism, unshaven body and all.

Also, I'm really amused by the idea that shaving != haircut, since, you know, technically, it is getting a haircut. Except, like, for your legs :)

[identity profile] snugduff.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed!

Oh, hai, didn't know you were here. :D

Re: 167

[identity profile] khokokat.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I have incredibly sensitive, allergic, and eczema infested legs (well, everywhere, really) and I gotta say if my legs are hairy, I cover them. I do think it sucks how society expects girls to shave, but honestly I'm embarrassed if I'm walking around with hairy legs. I mean, shaven legs do look nicer. Now in your case I totally understand, because if shaving/waxing leaves your legs cracked and dry you shouldn't subject yourself to that. But you have to understand how people view these types of things and unfortunately it probably won't change any time soon. :( However, women who don't shave for whatever reason SHOULD NOT be classified as slobs who don't take care of themselves, that's awful and way too extreme.

...On a side note, I've learned to never ever ever wax. It way too harsh on my skin and has disastrous results. When I have to shave, I moisturize like crazy more than usual, use a ton of shaving cream, and shave downwards. It takes forever but it doesn't hurt quite so much. Oh and cover your legs in cream afterwards. Just in case you ever want to try again.
