Platonic love and romantic love aren't the same thing, it's true.
But romantic love -- and a devoted relationship; like other people said, I'm not talking relationships where the only thing holding them together is boning -- will involve a close friendship as well. That's just how it works.
Thus, uh, if you put them in an actual relationship, you're not... taking away friendship from it, you're adding romance TO the friendship.
And honestly, if you think being friends and lovers cheapens a relationship from one wehre you're just friends... well, there's no ways to phrase my thought that don't sound like I'm judging any relationship YOU might have. But doing so casts a negative value judgment on romantic love/sex, and that's sad, honestly.

Anyway, it's not that I don't understand, in a way, where the OP comes from. There are characters whom I'm not interested in shipping because I find their canon relationship much more interesting without the romance aspect; and characters whom I ship and whom I read fanfic/doujinshi about, but I definitely don't want to see them hook up in canon because I love their canon relationship. But saying that romance cheapens a relationship... nah, that's just not true.

Yeah, no, I understand the concept SORT OF, in that... well, not every friend WILL become lovers, because not every friendship IS of that bent. But some are, and that doesn't make it a worse friendship, guys! And seriously, I only know MGS, not PW, but if they're living together and eloping together and planning to die together, I'm not sure why exactly that's not easy to view as a relationship or a marriage, or why saying that it's a romantic relationship "cheapens" this. If it cheapens that, it cheapens every long-term relationship or marriage that DID involve romance, because -- what? It's the same thing, you guys, to base the judgment on. Whether or not you ship it, that doesn't mean the concept itself is a cheapening one.

(I just got into MGS, and I really love Otacon and Snake together. They're wonderful <3. But the amount of badfic I've found while searching for stuff to read... :/ Yeah. There's so much for them than just having teh buttsekks, really, I think "good written gen" > "bad characterization and porn for the sake of porn" any day.)

(Yes that. I think there's a huge difference between a relationship cheapening something and badfic not 'getting it' and cheapenin it lolol sob. I LOVE GEN TOO, MAN.)

(GEN IS AWESOME. Besides, it does tend to be better written than 70% of the romantic fics.
As for Snake and Otacon, they demonstrate a lot of love for each other in the game, so even if you make it friendship/platonic, the love will still be there.)Re: 133
