I wasn't saying that people should shut up if they don't agree with me; I was saying that the people ganging up on electricalsun just because THEY didn't agree with her should shut up, because all they're saying is "OH, YEAH, I DON'T AGREE WITH YOU, SO YOU MUST BE A DIPSHIT". I'm perfectly open to people's opinions.

If I gave the impression that I judge people on their looks, then I honestly didn't mean to. I'll admit that I hate to be judged by people because of my looks, but I don't think judging OTHER people on their looks is right. Unfortunately, though, it DOES happen and you just have to understand that and get used to it because it will /never/ change. React to it however you want; ignore them, conform, whatever. That's your opinion and your choice. And just because other people may or may not agree with that, that still doesn't give you the right to piss on everyone else's opinions and ideals.

I appreciate your comment, by the way. You're right that some people who judge people on looks ARE just shallow, sexist, and/or petty; but some people just do it because everyone ELSE does. It's a way of life.

If you're genuinely open to other people's opinions, then can I offer some advice? Don't throw around insults or dehumanise people in your comments ("apes", seriously? Not that I think apes are bad, humans are related to the them, but it's the kind of language that's often use to take away a person's humanity). Second, be clearer in what you say. Your original comment honestly didn't sound like you were saying that SOME people will judge a person based on their looks. It sounded very much like YOU judged people for not shaving. But I do appreciate the clarificaiton.

Third, I think your friend went about making her point in an extremely wanky way. Calling people idiots and telling them to shut the fuck up is not the way to get people to understand your point of view. And while I get that you were just trying to help, you actually made it worse and you were pretty insulting in many of your comments too. And maybe other people started it but you kept it going. You'd have made a very different impression if you'd kept your cool and responded calmly.

Finally, I completely agree with what you about people being judgemental and shallow. Believe me when I say I accepted that fact a long time ago. I don't bother to change them; in fact, I don't even acknowledge them. Life is too short to waste on assholes.

I wasn't really saying the ape thing in a way to dehumanize people; just that's, basically, what the "secret" was saying. I just chose a different phrasing, instead of "hairier than your boyfriend" or whatever(I now realize they were talking about ManFaye, lul that guy is beautiful < 3).

I guess I THINK I'm being clear, but I'm not being "as clear" as I hope I'm coming off as? I was just interpreting what I thought the OP was saying, not what my opinion was. But my somewhat aggressive way of expressing myself didn't really help, I'm sure x)

Frankly, I agree with you. She IS my friend, but the way she went about it sort of set herself up for the rude responses; I don't think she'll learn not to do that, because that's just how she rolls.

And was I really? Hmmm... I suppose I probably was; I wasn't trying to be MEAN or insult, and I'm not angry in the least; I'm really rather amused by all this, and I'm being kind of lighthearted in some of the things I say. But when someone goes and says something ignorant like "oh, you're not that bright", while not even elaborating on why they think that? I'll be respectful to a degree, and if they can't be mature enough to respond THOUGHTFULLY, then why should I be respectful to them any more? BECAUSE you elaborated on your thoughts, I felt it was only respectful to give you a well thought out response because you, obviously, went through the trouble of expressing your own thoughts instead of just assuming that I'll know just why you think this or that. And I thank you for that. But I think that's where a lot of people went /wrong/, because they just jumped into being rude to her. And, while I understand she wasn't being the most polite person here herself, why make it worse by being just as big of a dick, if not more? I don't even think she was MEANING to be insulting, but she came off that way. And then, when people just go accusing her of being the OP without even explaining their reasoning, or even going into detail about her own points? That doesn't show any kind if respect for her or anyone else's opinions.

And I totally agree with you; it's just a shame that the world is like that.

I understand now exactly what you mean. Thank you for clarifying, I'm quite relieved to know that you don't agree with the OP of the secret!

The problem with the agression is that we're dealing with a touchy subject and rude/angry/impolite comments tend to result in the same kind of responses, as you saw by my earlier comment to you. I'm sorry for my rudeness, I'll try to stay calm next time something like this happens.

I think part of the problem is that in a comm like FS, you're going to get a lot of trolling. People tend to assume that people are trolls and respond accordingly rather than give people the benefit of the doubt.

I've stood up for friends in flame wars before in the past, so I get that bit. I also found it better (for me, at least) to give support in private by sending an email rather than getting involved in the discussion. It's far less messy for everyone involved.

I think it's the nature of the internet, of this community and also because most people (myself included) tend to react before fully thinking things through. I try to be calm like Obama is because I really admire him (when commenting on internet forums just think, What Would Obama Do?) but obviously I'm still reacting before thinking.

You've got a good point in that it's often a vicious circle with these kinds of discussions and I'll try to keep it in mind for the future. Thanks for listening! I"m off to get some sleep.
