Most anime/game/comic book characters have very little hair because they're so stylised. It would look inane and be pointlessly time consuming to draw in every last little leg hair. Hell, a lot of men aren't drawn with chest or leg or armpit hair, yet I don't see the OP of that secret griping about MEN who can't be bothered to shave.
I mean, if you're cosplaying the ultimate modern girly girl, yeah, you probably should shave if medically possible, because it'd fit the character. If you're playing a girl from a medieval style world where it's just not practical to shave legs because the razors are straight razors like in Sweeney Todd, I don't really care whether or not your legs are shaved. Seriously, if I were a fighter chick from some fantasy world, I would be more concerned about having enough room in my pack for that extra bit of food, water or other essential than room for a razor and shaving kit, so... Not going to get pissy because your legs are fuzzy.
Besides which, I just think that saying a woman MUST shave to play a character leads into the uncomfortable territory of they must also lose weight, grow/shrink an inch or two, and get a bigger rack. And I don't agree with telling someone that something they're doing for fun is something they shouldn't be doing because their body isn't an exact duplicate of the character's (or what the observer believes the character's to be in the case of body hair). Even with something as easily solved as shaving.
I'd really like to know what the OP meant by the "taking care of yourself" line. Not the best choice of words there if all they meant was that it gives the impression that you don't really care about your cosplay, so God knows how you care for yourself outside of cosplay.

EXACTLY. I know some people are just picky about quality and don't mean to 'discriminate' (quotion marks for safety, since this place is so wank-prone) against people without 'perfect' faces and bodies, but it doesn't stop them from sounding like asses.
