I think you make a cogent point but I also don't think there's any real useful way for the comics to address it, because what it really represents is one of the points where the link between the speculative conceptual superhero parts of the thing and the metaphorical meaning of the thing doesn't quite connect the way it should and I don't think there's any way to make it do so.
