I think you make a cogent point but I also don't think there's any real useful way for the comics to address it, because what it really represents is one of the points where the link between the speculative conceptual superhero parts of the thing and the metaphorical meaning of the thing doesn't quite connect the way it should and I don't think there's any way to make it do so.

To be fair, I don't think Magneto has ever had a problem with mutants using their powers to defend themselves from the powers of other mutants. Given that his most frequent and powerful opponent is a telepath, him using a metal helmet to defend himself seems more pragmatism than prejudice to me. Telepathy is one of those powers where if you don't catch it the first time, you may not even realise you need a second chance. And Magneto's never been known for fighting by Queensbury rules.

I once saw a Magneto/Charles shipfic where Charles broke up with Magneto because of an argument over telepathy. Didn’t save the link, though.

I think I saw two fics that did address this specifically. Sorry, I can't remember what they were called ... but yay! They exist?

I mean, no? Magneto uses his helmet specifically to prevent Xavier from mind-controlling/stopping his nefarious schemes. The same way he'll fight against the X-Men despite them being fellow mutants, because they stand against him. Combating against telepathy is just one of the defences he has to have in order for him to achieve his goal.
I don't think it's possible for the comic to address it because Xavier would simply use his power to track Magneto down and defeat him almost instantaneously. It's kinda hard to make a point if the point you are defending against is ready and willing to use it against you.

At least you aren't playing Metal Gear... I think I died a little during that hour and a half long cutscene.

LOL. There's actually an extremely popular fic about this and it's bad, not least of all because this take is...bad. Just because you have the power to invade someone's privacy doesn't mean you have the right to. It's like saying that because Mystique shouldn't be ashamed of her abilities or appearance she is in the right for using her powers as an impostor in dishonest/harmful ways. And Erik's views are pretty warped but he would say you need a good reason to use your powers against a fellow mutant even if he reasons that to go his way as often as he needs to.

Not to mention, why would you want to take away the meaning of any time when someone consents to letting Charles read their mind?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
What do a bunch of telepaths know that I don't?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Magneto is not anti-telepathy in general, though, and the helmet being a telepathic shield comes from the movies (though has since appeared in the comics as such). He's generally very comfortable with people using telepathy, and only blocks it when he's fighting telepaths (which he can do with his powers any time he wants - like when he was posing as Xorn at the school in Grant Morrison's run). And he uses the same powers to block, say, Jean throwing stuff at him, or Wolverine's claws.

So yes, maybe the movies should address it, but it doesn't make sense for the comics to do so since it's not a problem there.

Wow. Is this a trolling take?

Trying to protect against telepathy is "extreme prejudice against telepaths"? As if.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. Preventing people from invading your privacy without your consent isn't really what I would call prejudicial. Telepaths wanna use their power with people who are OK with it? Awesome! But saying that being pro-mutant means you have to let others use their powers on or against you whenever THEY feel like it is... no. That's like saying its prejudicial against mutations to put gloves on if Rogue wants to hold hands with you.

Yeah, I agree with most people here. I never had the impression that he was prejudiced against all telepaths or telepathy in general. Just, you know, he needs the helmet to work against Xavier, or there'd be no story much of the time.
