I feel you, although my preferred character archetype is slightly different (replace "masterfully constructed veneer of cool bravado" with "intense grumpiness and possibly cynicism", also add a little more heart-of-gold to the equation)

replace "masterfully constructed veneer of cool bravado" with "intense grumpiness and possibly cynicism"

So like, Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place?

Honestly, the "masterfully constructed veneer of cool bravado" is pretty flexible, anyway. I think it's more about how resolutely the character projects their chosen veneer, than how cool and showy it is.

add a little more heart-of-gold to the equation

I do love a secret heart-of-gold, but I've very flexible about how much of one a character has. Also, I like a lot more "secret heart-of-gold" stuff in my fanfic than in my canon. In canon, a little bit goes a long way, for me.
