I dig this description. Give me examples plz.

Not OP, but Kokichi Ouma from Danganronpa V3 is the only one who comes to mind immediately (and even then some would disagree with me).

(Anonymous) 2019-10-04 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but imo Tony Stark and Jessica Jones are both solid examples of this character type. And I love them both. :)

OP

Hahaha! It's like you read my mind, anon. These are two of my top examples of this trope, for sure.

most characters in The Dynamic

Particularly the Absolute Nightmares, I think. I don't know if many of the Sweater Boys fit this type.

Batman/Bruce Wayne. Red Robin/Tim Drake.... like, most of the Batfamily...

OP

As others in this thread have said, Tony Stark really is the poster child for this type. He epitomizes this character type so perfectly that you could honestly just name it after him.

Jessica Jones is another fantastic example (and one of very few female examples of this character type, sadly).

Harvey Specter from Suits is a good example, though he’s a little less neurotic than the standard.

Logan Echolls from Veronica Mars is this type.

Veronica Mars herself is…not quite this type, but she’s close to it.

Greg House, the BBC version of Sherlock Holmes, and Bill Masters from Masters Of Sex are all this type, though in their case I do acknowledge that they are genuinely assholes. I don’t find them as unforgivable as a lot of people do, because like I said, I love this type. But I won’t sit here and argue they’re not assholes, because they are.

Lex Luthor from Smallville is a darker version of this type, at least for the first couple of seasons before he goes full-on villain.

Jeff Winger from Community, Alan Shore from Boston Legal, and even Spock from new Trek are all this type to lesser degrees.

And personally, I would say Lisbeth Salander is this type, though maybe only in the US movie, in which her underlying vulnerability is more tangible. She’s possibly not neurotic enough to be this type, but she ticks enough of the boxes to ping as the type for me.

Oh, I forgot Lucifer from the show Lucifer. God, he's so this type.

And I guess Crowley from Good Omens is a fair bit this type too, come to think of it.

Mick Rory from Legends of Tomorrow. John Constantine.

Problematic favourite characters can still be problematic. Being sympathetic doesn't negate being an asshiole.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's not so much that I think there's nothing at all "problematic" about these characters, it's that I just don't think they're that bad. Some of them, ok, yeah, some of them are pretty bad. But often people think they're way worse than they actually are, imo.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I get that. I have such mixed feelings with these type of characters that I pretty much have to take them on a character by character basis. The depth of why they act the way they do is the breaker for me.
People really do like to dogpile on characters at the drop of a hat though. I can hate a character and still be blindsided by what people say about them at times. It's like if you're bad you have to be bottom of the barrel or nothing.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree with all of this. There just aren't that many characters that inspire No Chill On The Internet levels of hate in me.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of those types of characters, but I can understand why other people would be fans of them.

I feel you, although my preferred character archetype is slightly different (replace "masterfully constructed veneer of cool bravado" with "intense grumpiness and possibly cynicism", also add a little more heart-of-gold to the equation)

replace "masterfully constructed veneer of cool bravado" with "intense grumpiness and possibly cynicism"

So like, Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place?

Honestly, the "masterfully constructed veneer of cool bravado" is pretty flexible, anyway. I think it's more about how resolutely the character projects their chosen veneer, than how cool and showy it is.

add a little more heart-of-gold to the equation

I do love a secret heart-of-gold, but I've very flexible about how much of one a character has. Also, I like a lot more "secret heart-of-gold" stuff in my fanfic than in my canon. In canon, a little bit goes a long way, for me.

Yes. As people said upthread - Tony Stark! Who I love. Also Doctor House. Love him, too! I didn't like the series much but I *did* like Jessica Jones. I think the saving grace of these characters is that they genuinely care, even though they try to hide it or pretend they don't, and when you know that, you can really like them.

Absolutely! If anything, I think this type of character tends to almost care too much, in a way. They're the classic overcompensater. They feel faulty and vulnerable so they project cool indomitability, and they care too much so they act like they don't give a shit. Though the fact that they actually care too much can be buried pretty deep, depending on the character. Sometimes even they don't know it about themselves. I think this type of character often believes their own hype, or loses track of which parts of their own hype are real and which parts aren't and ends up with a muddled self-identity for it. *squishes all of them*

Yes, yes yes! :D

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of the reason a lot of people tend to dislike this character type is that... let's face it, they're a horrible sort of person to have to deal with in real life, so it's not hard to understand how people can have a kneejerk "ugh" reaction to these characters no matter how well they may be written.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly have no idea how I'd react to someone like this if I met them in real life. I think if they were on the mean end of the spectrum, like House, it'd be too much for me. But if they were on the less cutting end of the spectrum, I might actually like them.

I mean, my maternal grandmother was a lot like this - a tough lady who lived alone and always said the true thing to your face even if it was incredibly insensitive - and I fucking loved her. There was also a girl in my high school who was know as one of the "popular girls" and she could be mean, but also weirdly perceptive and truthful? And also, you could tell she'd been through a lot of shit and was just doing her best to look like she wasn't struggling. And even though I was one of the "geek/nerd" kids and low-key feared her, I always had a weird respect for her too.

So maybe I just like these kind of people - up to a point at least. *shrugs*

When you see characters like this from an outside perspective, I can see writing them off as jerks, but like... when you get to see inside, and you see how they worry over people and how they have a lot of feelings and how they're frustrated by an inability to communicate the feelings because of their damages... I think these characters can be very relatable even if that isn't how I behave.

1. I tend to like those types of characters too.

2. That is an absolutely gorgeous background image!
