I just found out a commercial I was in bought further rights to air the commercial, which means I get paid an additional $3200. Which is amazing.

Except.

My government disability only allows me to make 12K a year, and I just hit 12K two days ago. So I just made $3200 and I dont get to keep any of it. In fact, since I'll still have to pay CPP on the money I can't keep, it's actually going to cost me money.

I dont even know how to feel rn. JFC. It's surreal.

Can you get the money and turn it over to someone as a payment for some...thing, or put it in some kind of investment thing or something? So that you get to 'keep' it without using it?

My sis in law had the same issue of getting a big chunk of child support in one go ( someone died, ex-dad got money), and the SNAP/welfare people telling her she couldn't put it in savings or anything, she had to spend it or she'd lose a bunch of her SNAP/whatever, because that would put her over the line. She wanted it for an emergency fund, but they said no.

Fucking ridiculous.

Unfortunately I have to claim my income every month, and the Ministry can check to see if what I claim I've earned matches up with what the government has documented as my earnings. So I have to claim it properly, as income.

I realized after the fact that my situation isn't quite as bad as it seemed at first, though. The government doesn't take the money you earn, it simply deducts everything you earn in excess of 12K off of your disability support. So the government simply won't give me any more disability payments until January. Which basically means I'm out 2K of disability money, but up 3K of earned income. Could be a whole lot worse?

God, that's terrible. It's like they don't want people to improve their situation. It's like they want people to stay stuck. Because if they want people to have a shot at improving their situation, allowing them to feel a modicum of financial safety and security is a great start. But noooo.

EXACTLY! And yay! That isn't an *ideal* outcome - it would be nicer to have this new money as extra rather than baseline expenses - but much better than them doing something nasty, like halving your income.

There should be special trusts for disability you can arrange for it to be paid into. Call up your case worker and ask about it.

I've never had a case worker. I'm not sure caseworkers are even a thing here. And because it's money I earned from my job, I have to claim it as income, which means it counts towards my 12K of maximum earnings. It's not that the government takes my money; it's that they deduct the amount from my disability payments. The rules are pretty clear. If it were inheritance or a lottery win or something, there may be a way around it, but not with earnings.
