Re: Sort of based on 6

Old show, but The Mentalist. I was amazed after the season 3 finale when Jayne shot Red John in a shopping mall and then calmly waited to be arrested. I thought, wow, this is such great story telling, there are so many places the show can go, and won't it be interesting to explore the character when he's no longer revenge driven. But then the first episode of season 4 happened and they retconned it and it wasn't Red John and we were back to searching for Red John with procedural typical stuff mixed in and I was just DONE, even though I was never fannish about the show.

I didn't rage quit the Mentalist, but I did annoyance quit the Mentalist. Part of it was them retconning the S3 finale, which just felt so cheap and tedious. But I think more of it was just that I realized the show was never going to let the supporting characters be more than flimsy supporting characters - even Lisbon, damn it! It was always going to be The Patrick Jane show, with everybody else following along after him with barely anything important to do for the story. And while I loved Jane to no end, I hate when all the other characters in a show are permanently stunted by the writers' obsession with their lead.

I agree. It made me so angry that he just got away with it during the trial. He got away with lying to Lisbon, with murder, and then we find out that it wasn't even Red John anyways, so none of it even mattered. No character growth, nothing, just back to square one. Ugh.
