I don't think that's a good explanation

Cause like... A lot of people like angst a lot

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Right!? I fucking love angst. One of the surest ways to bore me with a fic is to have almost no angst at all. Miss me with that fluffy stuff, thanks. I don't totally disagree with the OP's point, but I'm not sure why they're specifically pointing the finger at angst.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I'm reading a ton of angst and whump fics. Many are great. Not all get the same amount of comments - some get tons others get one or two.
It's not the quality of the fic but other factors including time of posting and if the readers 'know' the author and promotion on other sites and IDK blessings from the fic gods or something.

LOL A+ pic

Too much of anything can make something unpalatable. Not sure why you're singling out angst here.

You've clearly never encountered the insane popularity of "real life stories" and biographies of people who died young and tragid deaths. I suppose it could be that those genres simply aren't as popular in the Anglosphere, but I promise you, I live in a language community with a considerable appetite for tragic "true" stories.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between the market for non fiction/memoirs and the market for fiction, though. Readers might be more open to angst if it's real...less so if it's fiction...and maybe even less if it's not written well. I don't know about you, but I've read plenty of stories where the author just piled on the angst to the point where the plot or characters got lost, or it strained credibility or it was so over the top that it became hilariously melodramatic and unreadable. It's not a rare phenomenon.

Do 'misery porn foster care or disabled children' stories count? I frequent a charity shop that gets Cathy Glass and Torey Hayden on the regular

(unless that's not an indicator of popularity)

Oh no, they're *incredibly* popular in English. They can be called "misery porn" if it's all about the suffering or "glurge" if it's all about how they inspired others with their suffering, or if it's about the heroic parent/teacher/sibling who cared for them. Jodie Picoult writes the fictional form.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
They are massively popular in the Anglosphere, they even have their own genre - "misery lit". Unfortunately. Voyeurism of a high and nasty order.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm definitely getting the feeling that this is aimed at a particular person

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this big time.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the only way it really makes sense to me is if it's aimed at a particular person. If it's not, then I have no idea why angst specifically has been singled out as the reason people's writing isn't more popular.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent picture choice, OP.

I sort of agree. But I don't think it's because of too much angst. People just can't write.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
... or it could be that a lot of readers are too lazy to appreciate good writing (hence the ridiculous numbers for poorly-written self-indulgent reader insert smut).

Love the secret design, op! Yeah, I agree. If you want to write for yourself, then there's no need to worry about what other people think. But let's face it, most people are writing in hopes that others will find their work appealing in some way. Every writer to figure out the balance for themselves.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-05 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I was with you until the angst thing. That's a personal preference of yours. I love angst and have very rarely seen a fic go too far into angst territory.

Fandoms have different tropes and genres that are popular, and if a writer wants a lot of feedback, they generally need to conform to those popular ones. They definitely don't have to - there's almost always an audience out there for any kind of fic - but they can't expect a huge response if they're choosing to write something that fewer people are interested in reading.

I agree, too much angst just becomes repetitive and boring

I do like angst, but it very much depends on the kind of angst, how it's written and lot of other factors that will determine whether or not I'll like a story/fic.

I do agree that people can go overboard with it and it ends up being almost ridiculously melodramatic.
