Fortunately it's impossible for me to be a tattle-tell, because I'm not a five year old.

Lmao, right? And reporting someone for breaking rules is not tattle-taling. And if it is, then who cares, it's not a bad thing. If someone breaks the rules at my work, damn right I'm going to say something (usually directly to them because we're all fucking adults), but because the rules are in place at my work so that we don't kill patients, they're not something I'm going to turn a blind eye too.

The severity of the rule breaking shouldn't have an impact on whether or not something is reported imo.

The severity of the rulebreaking should absolutely have an impact on it. What matters is how wrong it is, how right it is, how harmful it is, how helpful it is. Rules are a structure that may or may not be of use.

Lawful Neutral vs. Neutral Good

I can't agree. If the rule is a bad rule (in the same way as if a law is a bad law) then work on changing or removing that rule/law. It's not cart blanche to break the rule/law because you personally do not agree with it?

I think there are some rules that aren't really morally good or bad. So, like in this case - adding a donation link to your page isn't morally bad. It just can't be allowed on AO3 for legal reasons. The rule still has to be enforced enforcement, because enforcing the rule serves the greater good of allowing AO3 to continue to exist. But the rule is only a means towards that end, it's not good in and of itself (it's a hypothetical imperative). So it's not really morally necessary for some random AO3 user to help enforce it.

Especially if they don't actually care about the morality of it, and are just annoyed at people asking for donations.

Technically that isn't true. Going off and reporting a fic writer for doing something you don't like, specifically because you don't like it, is pretty much the definition of a tattle-tail. They could have easily have called a rat, just to add my two cents.

Except this isn't just "They did something I don't like." it's "They did something that is specifically against the rules." The fact that they only reported it because they don't like it is petty for sure, but I don't object to them reporting rule breaking.

The way I read the secret was that they always reported such a thing, and that they were glad AO3 started to enforce it. For some reason I figured that AO3 only began banning accounts recently, and this was the OP's reaction to that. Turns out AO3 has had rules against it for a while now.
I don't object to it either for the most part. Mostly I was just surprised someone would argue against calling it tattle-tailing.
