I'm assuming that the secret-maker is coming from the "if it isn't something they would do in canon, is it still in character?" perspective.

Re: 106

It still doesn't make much sense to me, then...I mean, it really depends on the character in that case. One character might have only one true love, but there's other characters that canonically have multiple love interests...

I dunno, it just seems like you can't make a sweeping generalization about it.

Re: 106

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is where context comes in. If your character doesn't have a permanent-or even any clear-love interest, then yeah, go for it. But if they do have a True Love, or are utterly indifferent to others, and are paired with someone who they haven't shown an interest in, or, better yet, someone who's hurt someone they love, it's a bit different.

Not every character is paired off (most characters aren't, actually) but they don't live in a vacuum, and the context of the other people in their lives and their backgrounds, etc. are a part of the character.

Re: 106

I agree that those situations are more challenging to write, but it's not impossible. It'd require a lot of work and development to write well--which a lot of fanfic writers don't take the time to do--but you can still write a character IC and have them end up with someone else. This is particularly true if you're writing a fanfic that takes place before the character fell in love with their "true love".

Or even after. One of my fandoms has a character that falls absolutely, head-over-heels in love with a woman--so much so that once she dies, he spends fifty years sleeping in her tomb to guard it. But eventually he comes out of it, meets another girl, and falls for her, too. In fact, the main point of the storyline is how she changes him.

Now, if the story had stopped right after the woman's death, and someone decided to write a fanfic where one day he awakens and meets a woman who changed his life...there'd probably be cries of "MARY SUE!" no matter how well written it is. But I don't think that's really right, if a professional writer can do it to their own characters, why not fanfiction? It's not saying that the first love was unworthy, it's just writing a story.

So yeah, I don't think the "one true love" thing is as solid as some people seem to think. I think there's a lot of room to play around in for the large majority of characters.

(That being said, when I ship pairings that are more cracky--rivals, enemies, characters that never even talk to each other--I do it fully aware of how cracky it is. But I don't think it means you have to suddenly twist the character's personality to the point that it's unrecognizable, depending on the characters in question.)

The bit with the "one true love" thing is that, when the author does that scenario, it was probably the original intent. (Barring things like comics and TV shows where you start with one intended pairing and writers/cast change and an impression where, even if the writer didn't mean it in such a way, the writer objected to the pairing, and "got rid of" the character. For example, when a person is fixated on and devoted to one person for the entire length of canon, but then post canon hooks up with someone after that person dies (when the canon gives no indication of death soon) or suddenly sleeps with someone they were never interested in before, AFTER ending up with the true love, the reader comes away with a different impression.

The scenario may be the same in terms of plot, but the intent and perception aren't.

ETA: BTW, what canon is that? It sounds like either manga or wuxia. And possibly suited to my most base fictional angst/crack wants. But back to the topic: it really is all about how people perceive it. (And there are cases of professional writers who do similar things, and the fans hate it because they were led to believe they should support a couple all that time, and then were suddenly told not to, or where they think a person made the wrong choice when they had another open to them. There are a few things that are even famous for that, such as Ivanhoe and Little Women.

That's a good point, but that's where "written well" comes in. To have a character "suddenly" switch love interests is just...well, poorly done and dull. I find it frustrating even if it's in canon. A character that jumps from love interest to love interest at the blink of an eye just comes off as seeming, well, as if they weren't really in love at all. That I really dislike, whether it's fanfiction or a character in an actual canon. If I was going to see a character fall in love with someone other than their love interest, I'd like to see a detailed fic with a slow build up. It's possible to do that, though.

Oh, the canon I was referring to is a manga, yup. Chrono Crusade. The backstory concerning Chrono's first love interest is actually not revealed until about 3/4 of the way through...in what amounts to practically a volume-long flashback. (...The anime only had her show up for something like 15 minutes. It was pretty disappointing in comparison.) There's definitely a lot of both angst and crack in the manga, too....XD It starts off seeming like a mostly funny adventure manga and slowly takes a darker turn as more of the backstory is uncovered.

I don't think people that write non-canon pairings always write what they think "should have" happened, if that makes sense? It certainly does happen sometimes, but other people just like exploring other things that could have happened. I write pairings that aren't canon, but I tend to ship canon pairings the most (...unless the canon pairings were just...written very disappointingly).

Re: 106

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think part of it is that people often lose sight of the line between what they want, and what makes sense for the characters.

I admit, the entire shipping phenomenon escapes me completely. I mean, I ship some canon pairings, and some "understood but not explicit" pairings (Helen/Deneve in Claymore, Hawkeye/Mustang in FMA, etc.) but there's never been something where they had a non-romantic relationship where I think it would be more interesting if the relationship were sexual or romantic. But for whatever reason, people seem to hold romantic and sexual relationships up as better and more important than those that aren't.

But yeah, even if I'm utterly neutral on the pairing, if it doesn't work for me, if I dislike the pairing (or any important relationship) I tend to have problems with the overall work.

Oooh...ChronoCrusade. I was following that in it's initial stateside release, but then several manga I was reading were cancelled/put on hiatus, and I got really annoyed and got rid of them all, and that was one of them. Naturally, they've since mostly been completed or picked up by someone else. I did watch the anime...err...I think last year, though.

Re: 106

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Some people do, but I don't think all do.

It's a matter of taste. Doesn't mean people are "right" or "wrong". Really, I tend to be pretty lose when I say I "ship" something, too, alot of times I mean the romance side of things, but I find their relationship interesting on a platonic, friendship level, too.

I actually used to be kinda like that, but I got too...well...nitpicky and stressed out with it. I'm much happier being pretty much "anything goes" when it comes to ships--as long as the writing's good and makes sense.

Ahh, unfortunately the anime isn't as good as the manga--they really rushed things and changed a lot of the character development, particularly Rosette and Aion. It wasn't unwatchable, though, the manga was just much more in depth. (And had a compleeeetely different ending. XD)
I only just recently read and finished the manga, so the hiatus stuff wasn't an issue for me. I guess I was lucky?

*flails a bit at Tutu icon*

See, I don't get why disagreeing with something means you think it's "wrong," at least not in fandom. It just means you disagree. You may passively disagree in a "I don't see it" way, and it may mean you have serious problems with it and/or are squicked out by it or see it as wildly out of character, but it doesn't mean you think the person who likes it is weird or sick or bad or wrong. You have different opinions. You may even dislike their opinion. That doesn't mean it has any influence on your respect for or opinion of them. (Yes, some do let that influence them, but I think most people don't.) Besides, how fun or interesting would it be if everyone always agreed?

That matches up with what I've heard about the anime/manga in general, really. I think there was just a period where some companies were taking on more than they could handle, as far as the manga went.

Re: 106

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh that's such a cute icon! XD Princess Tutu is my main fandom, I just don't have many icons loaded for it right now because I normally have a huge amount of them in my account...

Oh, no, I wasn't saying that people that don't agree with me or wrong or anything! The tone of the original secret seems to be like that, which is kinda what I'm disagreeing with, I guess.

Yeah. Really, during that big boom of anime and manga popularity most companies seemed to be stretching themselves pretty thin...that's why a lot of them seem to be in trouble now, sadly. Or, at least, one of the reasons.

Re: 106

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really have a main fandom, but it's my favorite anime.

Oh, I wasn't saying you were saying that, I should have been clearer. It's just that so many people seem to approach fandom from that perspective.

Re: 106

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'd have more, it's just hard to be too active in very many other fandoms...Tutu's definitely my favorite anime, though.

Ooh, okay. Yeah, I agree. Honestly, I do tend to be nitpicky sometimes, but I think I try not to treat fandom too much like serious business. (Being in fandom as a kid beat it out of me. xD)

Re: 106

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an interesting question, but if you believe there really is no wiggle room, then shouldn't you hate all fanfiction?

Re: 106

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That would assume something along the lines of "the only fanfiction that exists is shippy fic of people who hate/have no interest in each other/are canonically in love with other people."

Fanon shipping isn't the only fic out there, it's just...the only fic people ever seem to notice. There is gen fic and crack fic and fic of canon and "understood but not explicit" pairings out there.

(Granted, I'm not really a fanfic person in general-mostly all I read is short gen and crack fic.)
