106. Eh. I went through the phase. The trick to getting over it is realizing that they're not trying to trump authorial intent: Writing a romantic fic isn't the same thing as saying "This is canon/should be canon."

I get your frustration, but I also think that you aren't really looking at it the right way if you think that the simple act of roleplaying or writing a fanfic is implying canon.

107. That is a sexy, sexy picture.

112. Zack The Chaste is not interested in tapping asses, for he is too kind and sweet and ~*heroic*~. This also means that he will never have eyes for you, only the first girl he ever loved whose roof he fell through.

115. I feel this way, too.

121. ....... What.

130. As long as you're not hating on female characters and calling people homophobic like it's going out of style, then whatever.

134. ♪ Oh, he doesn't look a thing like Jeeeeesus...

139. Everyone gets to judge you for everything, actually. Just sometimes it means that they're assholes.

145. Srsly.

151. lolkk. I have no respect for people who can't appreciate animation and are ignorant enough to hate on entire mediums.

Actually, there are people who think fanon is more important than authorial intent.

Re: 106

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there are. That doesn't mean that they're more representative of fanfic than those who don't.

Re: 106

(Anonymous) 2008-10-19 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
... that depends on how you define "fanon" and "authorial intent." There are a lot of fanfic writers who don't think they need to take the creator's personal opinions into account when writing fic. This is because people are usually a fan of the characters, not the creator. If authorial intent gets in the way of their enjoyment of the characters, then, yeah, they'll ignore it. As long as they admit that they're doing this because it makes them happy and not because they're superior to the creators, I don't see what the problem is.

This behavior is not limited to fanfic writers, btw. My sister recently told me about a book she'd read where author didn't describe the main character's appearance until the middle of the book, by which time my sister had already formed a mental picture. The author wanted her to be tall, blonde and blue eyed. My sister... didn't. Guess which mental image she used for the rest of the book?

Re: 106

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. People strike things from their mental canon all the time, and that's certainly not just limited to people in fandom. My mom certainly isn't involved in fandom, but when I asked her what she thought after she finished reading the last Harry Potter book, she told me that she only accepted half the book as having "happened."

Absolutely. Hell, most people aren't even aware of what the creator(s) think. There are a few exceptions, but most people don't have any idea who made the book/movie/tv show in the first place. Why should they care more about what these faceless (and, in the case of movies and tv shows, often nameless) entities want than about what they want?

Jesus christ, I HATE when authors do that. I would do the exact same thing you sister did in the case.

Re: 106

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmph. I'm of the opinion that authorial intent is nice, but it doesn't really actually matter (largely because I spent four years with professors telling me that if my work didn't speak for itself, that sucked because people were going to form their opinions based on what they saw, not what I said). Despite a lot of his other things, I always respected Russel T. Davies because in one of the first interviews with him that I read, he mentioned that there's one line of hinted-backstory that the Master (in Doctor Who) says that he had a very clear idea what it meant--but he'll never say, because he knows that everyone who saw it formed their own idea of what it may've been, and he thinks the idea of a thousand interpretations is wonderful (but then, Doctor Who has always been a show about possibilities).

I think authorial intent...well, it should be respected to a point. But the author doesn't get to stand by my shoulder and tell me what they thought--if it doesn't come through the medium, it's fair game. Example: I know logically that JKR wrote Ron and Hermione to be a cute relationship, and that her intent was when they got together, people would be happy. When I read it, I thought they were absolutely horrible and still can't actually imagine a permenant romantic relationship between the two being happy (I don't ship them with anyone else; I just hate that relationship). I know the author's intent...I just can't make it work for me.

Or something less controversial that gives a perfectly valid reason why sometimes fandom>author's intent:
Star Wars prequels vs. Star Wars EU. Which is better? No, seriously.

Or heck, Meyers didn't mean to write a "romance" that read like a super-creepy stalker thing...but she did.

Honestly, though, I think a fan's interpretation of a work is more important than what was meant nine times out of ten. I don't even mean with relationships or whatever the heck. You read something, your form opinions, likes, preferences, whatever. Why should the author get to tell you it's wrong? The story is there, the characters/world...those are there. The way you picture them, and your thoughts on the matter...that's yours.

Re: 106

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This is largely where I stand on the issue. Authorial intent only takes so far, and is only valid if it can be seen through the work by itself, if the author didn't convey it to the point that it is comletely obvious then it is not set in stone.

I mean this isn't just a fandom issue, this is basically authorial intent vs. reader interpretation and which one is more valid, the fact of the matter is neither is the more important, and just because an author says something is that way, doesn't mean that that was actually shown through the text.

So yes there may be certain pairings that probably aren't going to be easily broken, but that really depends on how well the text conveys that and whether the reader can see that.

Re: 106

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
See, I tend to think that if the writer is on a wildly different page for you, then the work itself is going to frustrate you, and you'll be happier with something else. I tend to think that, ultimately: (1) the writer owes you a good, satisfying story, (2) if the writer doesn't provide you with that, then you owe it to yourself to support something that does. (I don't know, it's just that I don't understand why people put themselves through the frustration of following something that is either not going where they want it to go, or that is going somewhere they don't like. I know that's not everybody, of course, but it is what tends to be vocal and noticable.)

This this this. Sometimes pairings just feel forced even when they're canon-- I've never read Harry Potter, but I've heard plenty of people complaining about how the romantic relationships in that series just seemed sort of pulled out of nowhere.

To use an example from something I've been into recently, Emil/Marta is the canon pairing in Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratatosk, but to me it just felt like the writers were trying too hard to make it work and kind of forcing it down your throat. (And this is coming from someone who ships Lloyd/Colette like burning.) In contrast, I saw a lot more honest-to-goodness chemistry between Richter and Emil in their interactions, so even though it's not the canon pairing, that's what I ship. There's certainly enough subtext there to use as grounds for a pairing.

So yeah, the authorial INTENT may have been Emil/Marta, but in my eyes it fell flat. I don't want to write fic about something that just doesn't work for me at all; if I'm going to write romantic fic for that fandom, it's going to be Richter/Emil because they've got more chemistry in my mind.

Oh, I don't know. I'm totally sure a fall though the roof can be arranged. It doesn't even have to be a high roof. Just the principle of the thing.
