And there are so many others that prove that at the very least, the two of them have an extremely strong friendship with a deep sense of trust, affection, and loyalty. As it were I think it's a lot more than that. It's difficult to explain, but John being John and Rodney being Rodney...they don't just act the way they act towards each other with anyone. The relationship and feelings they share with each other are quite unique to their case. I think that if you told anyone about their history, without naming names or factoring gender in with the two characters, people would automatically assume there was something going on.
(The Shrine was just the last straw, so to speak. I've always tried to say 'you're just being a fangirl' but after that episode I truly did start to believe that these two characters did have stronger-than-friendship feelings for each other in canon. Like I said, mutual, but I've found John to always be a bit more obvious about his feelings for Rodney than Rodney has about his feelings for John, and for that reason this episode was an eye opener for me.)
