Hair question
My hair is currently basically black. Really a very, very dark brown. The color I'd like to go is what the hairdresser called mahogany. A dark reddish-brown. To me it looked about the same color level as what I have now. But it would involve one level of lightening. I've never lightened hair before. So I'm just wondering if anyone has ever done it and what it is like.
I'm really in the mood for a change. But it is pretty much impossible to go from my color to anything else without lightening.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)Personally, I bleached my hair from light brown to platinum at home numerous times as a teen and only ever sustained minimal damage, plus all the other colors I went. But not everyone is going to have that experience. I guess my hair is just damage resistant. However, if you're hair isn't already heavily damaged, I can't imagine a tiny bit of lightening would hurt it much.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-09 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)I used to be naturally light blonde, but as I got to my mid-teens, my hair darkened, so I started dying it blonder. I kept doing it for years, but I always liked red (and have a complexion typically connected to being a redhead), so I tried strawberry blonde. It never stuck, usually not lasting more than four or five days, but after all the red was gone, I was left with a nice golden blonde, so I kept going back to it. I did try a couple of different reds over the years, but nothing held. Then I tried this intense red (I think it was Feria, but I can't remember anymore) and my hair ended up what I call Raggedy Ann red and even though I wasn't wild about the color, I figured it would wash out, but it didn't. It faded, but it held some red until I was ready to re-dye. Since then, my hair has been able to hold red. It always fades a bit, but a good amount sticks around. So, I've been a redhead for a while now and I still really like it.
Re: Hair question
(Anonymous) 2019-10-09 09:03 am (UTC)(link)I dyed my hair a bright teal not too long ago, it took forever because of how long my hair is, and how light they had to make it. I'd recommend asking them to cut off the dead ends, or closer to where you want it cut fist, just so you don't have to pay for the bleach/dye on hair that'll end up on the floor anyways. Depending on how long your hair is it may take a few hours overall, so be sure to ask, and plan ahead just in case!
You should wait two-three days before washing it, use cold to lukewarm water for about two weeks, with a colour friendly shampoo and conditioner. (I use dove colour care) It also helps to use a nourishing/moisturizing hair product while your hair is still damp! (the bleach tends to suck the moisture right out of your hair and scalp)
