It is A LOT worse on your hair. You have to bleach it first.

How bad is it for your hair to do it only one time, one level.

da but it's really not that bad. What's bad is if you're constantly changing colors so you have to bleach ALL of your hair on a regular basis. Otherwise, what happens is that when you go in for touch-ups, they'll bleach just the roots and then redye everything else.

Source: I'm a brunette who went blonde for a little over a year. Didn't hurt my hair one bit.

I'm not sure they'll even have to continually bleach my roots. The really dark hair is just the color I've been dyeing it for years. My natural color is several shades lighter.

Lifting your hair color one shade lighter is perfectly fine if your hair isn't currently damaged. Just maintain a good conditioning routine after and don't wash too often, which you don't want to do anyway to make the color last longer. The red in mahogany fades like a motherfucker.

Hair durability differs from person to person, but this sounds like a pretty minor amount of damage to me.

Personally, I bleached my hair from light brown to platinum at home numerous times as a teen and only ever sustained minimal damage, plus all the other colors I went. But not everyone is going to have that experience. I guess my hair is just damage resistant. However, if you're hair isn't already heavily damaged, I can't imagine a tiny bit of lightening would hurt it much.
