Re: How do you take your tea? (Or coffee...)

Why do people put milk in tea? I have never understood this. Milk in coffee I can understand because coffee is bitter/strong and I can understand wanting something to cut that a little, but tea is neither one of those and all I can think is that it would totally dilute the flavor.

I don't think I've had a tea that is as dark and bitter as coffee, but tea comes on a lot wider range than coffee does. Adding milk to green or oolongs is a travesty, but your typical breakfast blend, and certainly most British bagged varieties I've tried, are heavy enough for milk to be absolutely understandable.

See, I feel like it would overwhelm even those? Yeah, they're decently strong, but they don't have the sheer bitterness and heavy taste that coffee does. I feel like tea's flavor is just too delicate to stand up to milk, even teas like breakfast blends.

Depends on the tea. Some spicy blends work well with the milk.

Idk, I've had Assam based blends that were actually more bitter and strong than coffee. In general, the more malty a tea blend is, the better milk tastes in it. And a lot of people don't necessarily drink tea for the pure, undiluted taste of the leaves. Otherwise, teas like Earl Grey and similarly strongly perfumed blends wouldn't exist.
