Re: Life's little disappointments...

People keep stealing all the fruit from my trees and plants that overhang the back alley, and they’re not even ripe yet. There was a couple with a truck (!?) and a stepladder (!!!) laughing as they took every single pomegranate they could reach out there tonight.

I managed to grab one underripe dragonfruit before someone cut all the rest off. One pomegranate is fine; there’s more than I and my hens can polish off and even my aunt who loves them can’t eat them all. But every time I get excited about gardening again, some asshole decides to strip the pomegranate tree, or pick all the freesias, or in one case, steal an entire newly planted plum tree.

This is why both the avocados I’ve planted in the last year or two are nowhere near the back
fence.

Also, (hopefully) different neighbors keep complaining about my admittedly tumbledown house and decrepit yard. “What happened? It used to be so beautiful, but the latest owner really let this place go to shit.”...

The beautiful garden you keep bitching about missing was my work; I fucking miss it more than you. I have less time than I used to, water is more expensive than it used to be, we have more drought years than non-drought ones anymore, and I got fucking tired of getting stolen from. Also my mom died horribly of cancer while I took care of her, I was a full time student with a part time job, and by the time it was all over, I had no money or energy to keep up appearances.

So picking a flower, or a piece of fruit? Okay. A bouquet or a bushel? Fuck all the way off.

I’ve lived here a quarter century and 90% of the people bitching about and/or stealing from my yard are gentrifying rich assholes who turned admittedly boring 1940s tract houses into McMansion monstrosities and are mad my working class ass hasn’t sold up to someone who’ll turn an 800 square foot ranch house into a 3 story, 5 bedroom, 4 bath, 3 car garage eyesore with bonus astroturf.
